Yes there is I'm not an expert on explaining it though!

Yes there is. But one caveat, you can only do this if you have separate lights/bulbs for hi- and low beams. Click the link and check out my comments on the thread. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=102703
Re: running high and low beams at the same time on GTi (Cullen)

So if you add a diode between the high and low beam circuit, the lows will stay on when you switch to the highs ... right?
Would the fog lights also stay on?
Why would VW design the factory circuit to turn off the lows and the fogs when the highs are turned on?

Well the use of fog lights are for fog, there not running or headlights, It pisses me off that ppl use them for that!
Back to the driving in FOG. If you turn your high beams on in fog then you will be looking at a wall of fog, fog lights are designed to shoot under the fog.
So if you need to have your highs on, then you dont need your fogs cuz thats sensless and a waste of energy.
Also!!!!!
It is law in the US that the fog lighs turn off when the high beams are turned on.
Running high and lows suposively shortains the life of the bulb.
And could melt the crappy DOT spec plactic headlights on A2's
I suggest to save your $$$ buying high performance bulbs, and upgrading to euro spec headlights! then think about high performance bulbs.

AFAIK, simultanious use of high and low beams only shortens bulb life when it is a single-bulb (per side) setup. This is because both filaments (hi and low) would be on at once, and tremendous heat builds up inside that single bulb. Separate high beam vehicles (a la most GTIs). Sorry I can't help with the actual component that you need to install.

I agree that turning the highs on in fog is not a good idea.
Are the factory A3 GTI stock "fog" lights considered fog lights or driving lights? I always thought fog lights were yellow and should be mounted well below the bumper.
If a diode is placed between the highs and lows will the lows and the fogs stay on when switching to the highs, or will the fogs turn off?

the OEM A3 "fog" lamps are fog lamps. Yes you are correct that fog lamps should be mounted below the bumper for optimum visiblilty, but they are more likely to get damaged, not to mention block air intakes. Amber fogs (sometimes called french fog lamps) produce less glare then white fog lamps, but do not cover the same distance.
Sorry, cant help you w/ the diode and the fog on or off question, my Rallye Golf lamps on my A2 8V are hooked up so the lows stay on with the HIs, but I do not have fogs.
If you are so intrested in lamps, have you upgraded to the Euro, quad or IV look lamps? I would do this before I increase my energy draw on my car.
