running hotter than usual

387 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Vdubs
My car's temp usually hangs a little over half. but yesterday it was up over 3/4 for a bit. I let it cool off for 20 mins, then drove it home and it was right around 3/4, but more on the just over 3/4 side.
I was low on coolant last week, but I topped it off, and it is still good. I can't find any leaks. and I am still getting heat in the car.
My bentley is at work, so I'm having trouble figuring out whats up. Anyone have a clue?

How low was it? When you topped it off, did you leave the filler cap off and run it a while? If there were any bubbles trapped in the system, they might have trouble working their way out under pressure. Sure you're running a 50:50 mix still? Sometimes you can help the system out a little by squeezing the hoses a coupla times while filling (again with the cap open).
Check the fan? If the fan's not spinning up, or if the thermoswitch is bad... Did the afterrun kick in once you stopped?
Re: running hotter than usual (negativl)

hmm, I'll go run the car with the cap off for a bit. I am thinking that there could be some pockets in the system.
I'm also not sure if the fan came on. I don't think it did though.
when it was low, it was about 2cm into the overflow bottle. I filled it up almost to the max line with the extra mixed coolant I had left over from the flush I did 4 months ago.

Re: running hotter than usual (Fettes Brot)

My car did that this weekend. Water temp went to 3/4, and it woinded up being the fan. the fan spun off the spindle and the motor was justy going. Check that out.
also get yourself a low temp fan switch and low temp thermostat, I just put them in my car and it runs nice and cool. I used to be just to the right of half, now I am to the left of half
was it raining? The belt could be slipping from road spray if you don't have a vbelt cover. This happened to me a couple of times...and the faster I went, the higher the temp...
Re: running hotter than usual (clickhappy)

nope, dry roads. (Finally)

ur car must be like mine, no a/c and the vbelt shares with the water pump and p/s
i have a guard now but if ur car overheats fromt that again keep cranking the wheel right and left, u will get the belt jerking but it wil get the water pump movin again..
soemone on here actually sent me an extra splash guard,, i owe him my life... i overheated so bad the water boiled and i kept drinking and the car went BOOm boom

Re: running hotter than usual (Tbird Pimpistik)

k, I was just out testing it. I let it run with out the cap for awhile, then took it for a quick spin to get it up to normal operating temp. well it got back up to 3/4, so I go back home, loosen the cap. it bubbled in, then ran back out of the container. the fan didn't come on until I was giving up, but it did come on twice now. all the coolant hoses are hot as well. I am STUMPED.
btw. should the coolant be within the min/max marks in the overflow bottle when the car is off and cool? or is it supposed to drain back down the line??
HELP ASAP!!!!!!

Re: running hotter than usual (Fettes Brot)

The coolant should be at max with the engine cold.
Don't release the cap on a hot engine.
Replace the radiator fan switch.
