Running without timing belt cover ?

I have seen a few pics of cars without the timing belt cover on - at least not the top cover. Any thoughts on this - advantages / disadvantages?

it will definetly make it easier to keep an eye on the belt for damage. ran without one for years with no problem. if you have an adj cam sprocket easier access

I took both covers off both of my cars and never had a problem. Had them off of the Jetta for about 2yrs and never had a problem.

I would definitely not take off the lower cover. Imagine if a rock flies up and hits the belt. Its just safer to leave it on. As for the top, I leave that on too but it doesn't really matter.

We had a long thread on this not too long ago. A lot of people run without, but its there for a reason. The bottom pulley is real close to the RF wheel. If you kicked up a rock or something, you could really be out of business. Take a look at where you drive and under what conditions before you remove any protection VW thought necessary.

Speaking of that in my Bently it mentions a bottom cover for protection of the accessory pulleys and belts. Right now my hood has a nice stripe on it from water etc. being flung up from the lower pulleys.
Anyone tried this or have a part # for it

it's the alternatorbelt, gets wet and dirty and flings it up there. i know there are some splash guards you can get somewhere. i dont remember if there were stock ones. you'd think there was, it should be a recall. when it rains my cars powersteering and almost everything dies when it gets wet

i've had the top off for years, no prob but i would leave the bottom one on. [IMG

Unless you are running an ABA bottom end, and are trying for a domestic version of the ABF, I can see no rational reason for throwing away the top cam belt cover.
Fact- It weighs less than a pound
Fact- If you have a 10mm socket, you can remove/replace it in less than ten seconds
Snapped cam belts are expensive. Keeping the belt clean and free of oil and debris is a very good thing.
