S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow

1018 Views 23 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  s2002
Hi,
I have been driving an S2000, and considering 225 quattro for my wife. TT was always one of my favorite. although I am very attached to my S, I am very anxious to get TT into my family.
I had a couple of horror stories with my S2000 on stock tires on winter conditions. I'll get blizzaks for my S next winter.
Can you guys please educate me on what I should expect from quattro and stock tires? I will get 17'' 5 spoke wheels, and don't know whether all tires in audi rated same.
all comments and suggestions are the most appreciated.
thanks..

Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (s2002)

if you drive in snow, once a winter, you must get winter tires.
it is no difference 4 or 2 wheel drive when you braking you will slide!
i used to have RX300 last winter (SUV Lexus) & my tire were old ,because i knew i will get a TT in a spring i did not change the tires, i could not drive most of the time, so i had to drive my wife Cabrio with snow tires ...
Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (dobe)

Audi states in its literature for the TT that the performance tires that are standard equipment are not for Winter use. Audi recommends Winter tires for the TT it it is driven on Winter roads.
Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (CWK)

as far as straight line grip in the snow, the Pilot Sports (the good ones) worked completely fine in the ice and snow. but this was due to the Quattro system only. turning was a different story and they sucked beyond belief. summer tires are designed for a summer temp range and turn to plastic in the winter (figurtively) so i'd still spring for some cheap steel Beetle GL rims with winter rubber from Tirerack. then that car will be mindblowing in the cold as well
Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (M this 1!)

Agreed. I drove a chipped TT225 in ice and snow, and was amazed. Even though it had AVS sports, it handled extrememly well, espescially for the summer tires.

My TT did better on the stock Pilots than my Eclipse on all seasons. You can't drive like a maniac, but it was very decent. My stock Pilots were almost bald in the back too! The only time I got stuck was the blizzard, because of ground clearance.
Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (superXracing)

one set for winter and another set for 3 seasons (fall, summer, spring)
BTW, get the 3.2 VR6 TT 250
Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (Imola Yellow GTi)

do you know when 3.2 will be available?
In what ways does it superior 225 turbo? 25HP sounds like a difference, but how about the additional weight due to V6 engine? Or does Audi manage to keep weight same as 225?
Any price difference?
Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (s2002)

the v6 weighs 77 lbs more.
and with a chip, the 225 1.8t makes more power.
but the v6 has more at the low end.
Money says you'll start driving your wifes TT more than your S2k..

I think you'll be pleased with it.

Sorry if it was too much to handle at once; hope you didn't get yourself dirty.

Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (Imola Yellow GTi)

I have already downloaded these pics... I really like the new front end, especially the details where front end meets the fender...
color looks nice to stare at but questionable to drive.. (no offence for your imola)..
IMHO, such colors look better on exotics like ferrari, lambo, etc.
I guess I still opt for turbo against V6, at least for the turbo whistle...
Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (s2002)

If you don't believe in mods then get the 3.2, otherwise the 225 1.8t will do wonders for you with a few simple changes

My dad has a ALMS TT and he put 17s with Toyo Snow proxes on last winter, and let me tell you that car rocks in the snow. The TT is a blast to drive all year, so much that I think I may have to get one too!!!!
Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (CanadianTurbo)

You want to mod a VR6 then turn to HPA. single turbo VR6 or if you got the bang then go bi-turbo VR6 and whoop some 996's and vette's for dinner.

Audi uses same tire types as all other cars.
If the car has M&S rated tires and AWD, it will do great.
If it has summer-only tires, any temperature below 35 and any snow will cause the car to have low traction.
The TT can come with M&S rated or Summer only, depending on option.
For best performance in northern climates, you need a summer and winter set of tires.

Re: S2000 owner having questions about quattro on snow (Imola Yellow GTi)

Thank you very much for all the comments... Last sunday, I was pulled over for 80 mph where limit was 55.
this and a couple of previous incidents brought me to a reality that when I drive a tempting car, I go fast.
I'll let my wife drive my S2000 and I am planning to get a more mature less performance 4wd sedan, most likely A4 1.8T quattro, BMW 325 XI, or MB C240 4matic.
Any comments or insight on these vehicles???
I wish I would be living back in europe again and enjoy autobahns...
