As far as I know the standard model for the USA is the non-aspirated 170hp-engine.
Here in Germany, even a 140hp-engine with the same displacement is available. Both engines are quiet similar. The 170hp-engine only becomes stronger and faster at higher revs, but both engines are definitely not built for sports cars. I wouldn't call them slow, they are perfect for relaxed cruising, also the top speed is adequate with more than 210 km/h.
You cannot expect the kick, the T5 gives you. In my opinion, the 2.4T with 200 hp is the best engine for that car (apart from the D5 available in Europe). The engine characteristic is not as rough as the T5, although none of the engines can be called really rough or uncivilized.
So if you like driving a little faster, check out the 2.4T, if you're not a hell-driver the 2.4 will make a very satisfying job.
