As a long-time VDubber, I am in the market for a fun, fast, affordable AND practical daily driver. I was looking at Passat wagons (hard to find w/5 speed..), when a friend let me borrow his Saab 9000 Aero (1995). I was extremely impressed! Has 170000 pampered miles and could beat my heavily modded 16v GTI (149 WHP) no problem. Saw 137 mph and accelerating strong (accepted perf. figures posted are 149 top speed, 14.8 1/4 mile at 96 mph...)....Huge hatch, comfortable, quiet,... Interestingly, I drove his '98 Audi A8 just prior and I wouldn't bet against the Aero in highway acceleration.
I would offer him $7500 if compression test is okay. Anybody have any experience or opinions on this car?
Re: Saab Aero: An affordable alternative? (wolfsburg2)
Saabs are known to last forever.
I've got a friend who's got 300K MILES on his 85 Saab SPG, which he's also modified heavily. The engine runs like it was new.
If its been well taken care of, there shouldnt be any problem. Make sure you get a good shop to take a look at if before you buy it though; they can be expensive to repair.
EDIT - I forgot which car magazine wrote this, but that 9000 Aero is known to out-accelerate a Ferarri Testarossa from 90-120 mph. I think that's mentioned somewhere on saabnet...

My boss´s 95 Saab 9000 2.3 Aero (225hp) is a blast do drive (in a straight line).. If you floor 1st gear from a rolling start, you´ll go nowhere..get 2nd gear going and you´ll still go nowhere, it just spins the wheels (16") madly, it´s quite impressive for such a huge and heavy sedan.
On the highway it´ll read over 240kmh (150mph) going straight..
The seats are incredible, the steering lacks feedback, handling is safe yet boring, the build quality is also not too hot, a far cry from a Mercedes for instance.

You mean Vince T?
Chiming in, 170k is still nothing for a Saab. I bought my '85 SPG with more miles than that.
Re: Saab Aero: An affordable alternative? (Tom Traynor)
SAAB Aero is a blast to drive. Since SAAB is a car maker that's been very well-known for producing wonderful 4-cylinder turbo engines, reliability should not be a concern. 2.3 HPT is a bulletproof engine.
Re: Saab Aero: An affordable alternative? (A4Jetta)
Albeit, I am an avid Volkswagen audiophile, yet have lusted at one time for an 1987-89 SAAB 900 turbo, shod with 17" BBS & Pirellis lowered just a smidge, throw on the Thule roof rack and euro plate and call it my daily driver. I bet if I ever waned to own a car with a roof delete option I imagine it would be a new 9three Viegen hands down.
Re: Saab Aero: An affordable alternative? (stl4310)
Yep. Most SAABs have high mileage, it means they have rock-solid built quality and reliability. My uncle's 900 Turbo has more than 220000 km and still running like a champ.
