safety regs, nira/nhra

i got a few ?'s. first off, i dont plan on being a competitive drag racer. I usually just go to test and tune nights. My race interests are elsewhere, if u know what i mean. However, my car has undergone a lot of changes since i was last at the track. My local track was a nhra, but switched to nira (new owners). Im trying to figure out a) at what times do soft top convertibles need a roll bar (both organizations) and b) is the factory roll bar from vw considered ok (if so, for what type of speeds are we talking?)? This is a daily driver w/ some punch to it, not a specific built drag car. So im not all about making a unstreetable car. As it is, i have no creature comforts (radio/sound deadening, etc) other than i can drop the top when hot. I dont want to install a cage and gut the back seat just so i can make a few passes at the track. Trying to keep my car looking as stock as possible
If i remember correctly, i think it was sub 14's needed a rollbar (and how do they define rollbar, i.e.- stock, aftermarket, etc?). But this is from what i heard, have not read any rule books.
Thanks
Sails

I haven't read through all of the rules yet, but off the top of my head, I think it is sub 11.99 or faster that require roll cages/bars. Sub 13.99 requires a Snell approved helmet.

Yep once you break into the 11's you need a roll bar. I belive they are the same for both nhra and nira, but didn't nira go out. not enough intrest.. i though it all fell under nhra now.

no they were bought by NOPI...unfortunately

I believe the helmet rules also depend on what state you are in. I know in New Jersey, you can't compete on any track without a helmet.

Yea that is true.. I was at englishtown last year and during the down time befor the finals they had two maco tool trucks rase down the track.. 23 sec and the other did it in just under 30 sec's.. and both drivers were wareing helmets.. I have never seen a race on a track where they werent wareing a helmet.
Re: safety regs, nira/nhra (H2oVento)

Even if a helmet wasn't required, I would probably still wear mine. You never know what can happen.
Re: safety regs, nira/nhra (H2oVento)

Actually when I raced my Honda down in Budds Creek, MD if you weren't running 13.99's you didn't need a helmet.
Re: safety regs, nira/nhra (Bora18t)

NHRA is the main sanctioning body in ALL drag racing here in the states. IHRA also uses these same saftey standards. So get if you are NHRA legal you are good to go anywhere in the US. As for Canada, I think they would use the same rules.
Also I was building a Cab drag car when i got sick of it - and 13.99 or quicker requires reinforced rollbar.
11.99 or quicker requires 6 point cage. All Cars. There are also a few other things that are required at that level just dont remember off the top of my head.
I might just keep the boost lower until i get my cage - cuz i know brian and phil got their Jettas in the 11s My GTi should be there too.
Re: safety regs, nira/nhra (pyschovr6)

what do they consider a reinforced roll bar? I doubt the stock cabby bar counts. If so, i may just end up cutiing it out, and putting an aftermarket cage in, or just drop an 8v back into the cabby, sell it, and start on a rabbit
