So,

I recently bought this Audi and finally picked it up today. I'll show you some pics before I tell you a bit more about it.

























It's a '87 model, so a pretty early car. The B3 was introduced in '86. It's also pretty bare spec - so far, I think the only real option box that was ticked is the fog lights. The engine was only made from '86 til '88 when it got replaced by the 2.0E. It's a 1.9 liter inline-four with 113hp.

The body is in very good shape - no rust that I could find, no visible dents and dings. The rear bumper obviously needs to be replaced. A car that was parked just behind the Audi went up in flames a few years ago and the bumper melted. There were some shark edges on the melted bumper, so the previous owner simply cut the melted strip out of the bumper.

The interior is pretty decent up front with no major flaws. The rear is okay too, except for a few big stains where some white paint spilled. I'll see if I can get this cleaned up.

The engine... well, it runs. But not very well. I'll see if I can get it back in shape, if not I'll probably just replace it with a 1.8 or 2.0.


I bought this together with my old man as a shared project for some bonding time in the garage. Well, we'll either bond or we'll kill each other. :laugh:

The plan is to restore it back to how it was when it left the factory, completely stock. Then register it on historic tags and drive it around whenever we're in the mood. Possibly a road trip to Ingolstadt to visit the Audi Museum.

I've currently got my Porsche sitting in the workspace as it's waiting on a new generator, but once that's back on the road work on the Audi will begin. I've already found a replacement rear bumper which I'll pick up in a few days.

Congratulations, that looks like it is in very good condition!

I have always liked the 80's for how clean of a design they are, and the simple reliable 8v engines. However, they are not very common to find find anymore in the US, and parts are also really hard to come by.

Wow. This a beautiful thread and I am excited. Lots of old german stuff going on in the lounge lately and its great.

I love base spec German cars like this. Yes there's an exotic factor since we only get big engine well equipped cars in the US, but also because you're getting a car that's still high quality, just not fancy.

I shocked this thing didn't end up in Bulgaria or Ukraine 10~15 years ago and driven into the ground. The fact that it is still around Germany for you to save it is quite remarkable.

Ehhh, why wouldn't it be able to tow a car? :D

Admittedly, our European standards for a tow vehicle are slightly different than North American standards... The trailer with the car was actually just barely in the tow rating for the Voyager. But it managed without problem. It's the 2.8 Diesel. About as fast as a tonne of bricks, but it gets the job done. It's actually our dog hauler. Probably wouldn't use it to tow a car every day, but once in a while it's absolutely fine. People here often just use normal cars to tow other cars. Case in point, when a friend of mine also bought a B3 a few months back, he towed it home with his Golf:



Also just barely in the tow rating, mind you.

Thanks! It is! I've had a brief look under the car and it's looking amazing there as well.

Luckily parts aren't that hard to come by here in Germany. Audi Tradition is pretty much a joke from what I know, though. But there's a healthy used parts market for these - in fact, there's a guy who parts these out not far from me where I've already found that bumper I need.

True enough, a lot of B3s shared that fate sadly! There is still quite a number of them to be found, but they're getting less and less. You don't really see them in traffic anymore. If you see an Audi 80, it's usually a B4.

I'm so in on this. Since you and I bought two of the finest German autos money could buy in '87 on the same day! :laugh:

Really excited for your build/resto. I only rode in an Audi 80 once and it was circa 1993 or so. Cute girl that was going to the local boarding school and hers was loaded. I wasn't sure which I liked more at the time her or the Audi.

I think the other thing is the amount people are willing to put into the trailer. What you have there looks better than 90% of what's on the road here. Is that braked as well?

Oh, yeah, I get that.

Yeah, it's braked. At least here in Germany, unbraked trailers are only allowed up to a total weight of 650kg. So any car trailers etc. have some form of brakes as they're well above that weight.

Should be a fun project. I owned a 1990 Audi Coupe quattro and a 1994 Audi 90 quattro many years ago.

How do you get the car on/off the trailer. Does it have a hidden ramp?

Nice, I wish mine was a Quattro! But I doubt I'd have gotten it for 300 bucks if it was :laugh:

The trailer has got a hidden compartment behind the plate where the two ramps are stored. You just slide them out and stick them on the back. It's a pretty basic system but it works.

What motor is this? Around here those were sold with the 3A 2l motor.

Came to post very much this, there's a sleek purposefulness to them. Especially with aero hubcaps.
