hey all
i started to get a 2nd gear grind back when i did my swap. so i put "nice" oil in. i assumed royal purple was good oil. it cost most. and everyone spoke highly of the motor oil...

well i have since learned its not sticky enough and that doesnt help my issues cause now its hard to get into 1st gear.

sooooo until i can find a new one, or until i can get this rebuilt i may see bout a different oil.
if i go with a heavier weight will it help me at all? itd all be fine it it wasnt hard to get it into 1st gear. i have to try to force it. fail. try second. fail. throw it into third. then second then first and its good.
def sounds like synchros.

will heavier oil help?
which brand/what weight?
or is it too far gone? :banghead:

Really? Sometimes it doesn't easily come out of gear...like rev it out to like 6-7 k. then let off and engine break then clutch in and it sticks until I yank it out. That would make sense too...but all the other gears work perfectly

And with the engine off the gears all shift well too

soooooo still thinking about doing a nicer/heavier oil

the lucal oil addative and lucas 80w90 gear oil i added helped a little i think.
i also switched the short shift from short back to long

id say have the shift linkage re alinged, and hope its not your pressure plate. I can almost guarantee its not the Royal Purple thats good stuff, you did use 75-90 full synthetic right?

ive heard about a lot of people who run into gearbox issues after royal purple. it lacks something that makes it sticky. so it wont stick to the gears. it just falls off. good if you want low drag. but i want to save a bad box :p

i have heard good stuff about synchromesh.
i may try that. what happens if you use heavier oil?

irun 75-90 syncromesh in my mk4, and its fantastic. it used to be iffy on 3rd gear and now its quiet and smooth.

id imagine you may see some change, but i'd be curious to see if anything else is awry in the transmission department

ill have to try that!

but only cause it in 1st and sometimes 2nd?

i thought that too. but all the other gears are smooth as butter
I've noticed on customers cars they say its hard to get it into gear. And also on my vehical.some times its 2nd that is hard to get into or grinds or 3rd. I aglined the linkage and ordered a bushing kit from TT and it solved the problem. Pull the vss out and check the level of the fluid. Does the trans make any noise at all?

hmmm alright. i need to order that alignment tool then.
i usually hand adjust it haha

the fluid is pretty high.

on decel in gear, the gears sound loud. at least before i added 80w90 and lucal stabilizer. ill check again tomorrow.
neutral is nothing i can hear in the cabin
cruising in gear no sounds.

Being a couple of milimeters off can make a world of difference. Same thing with my mk1 the selector has to be 15mm from the base of the. Shift plate or it grinds and randomly doesn't go into gear. As applies in my mk3, I did it by hand/feel and it would grind 3rd and wouldn't catch 2nd sometimes. It would be wise to invest in the TT short shift kit with the full rebuild. The shifter is amazing and the rebuild shoud take a half hour if you are good at fixing cars.
