Scirocco rear strut bar, and golf ball shift knob, and steering wheel ????s

ok, here's 3 points:
1) what's the fundamental, real-world, tested, tried, and proven difference between a $250 Neuspeed rear strut tie bar... and a piece of aluminum pipe flattened at the ends with two holes drilled in it? anyone know? if nobody does, then i think i'll just try to find out myself.
2) my Scirocco's shift knob leather got really scary, so i ripped it off, and tossed it out. it was BEYOND care and repair. i was thinking of getting one of those "golf ball" shift knobs. will they drop right on with no modifications necessary? who has good prices on them?
3) the leather surround on the steering wheel is getting "gooey" and it's coming off in my hands. i am thinking of replacing the wheel with either another VW one (but something cooler looking) or a Sparco (i was thinking Momo but these days it seems increasingly like MOMO=rice). any tips on what is the smallest diameter i can go to and not have the wheel be in the way of the dash guages?
thanks!

Rear tie bar - it is said by those who should know that the 3-point Neuspeed bar is an improvement over the simple across-the-shock-towers models. I have the Neuspeed setup, it doesn't make any huge difference IMHO.
Golfball knob - yes it screws right on.. I have one and love it.. Potterman stocks them, dirt cheap too.
Momo=rice? Where the hell did that notion come from??!! Sparco stuff is more likely to show up in a rice grinder than Momo! Either makes nice wheels. Potterman is a Momo dealer.

ok, i'll try the aluminum bar thing. i saw it on a few race cars (like full-blown SCCA racing cars) and the drivers said that it was lighter than the neuspeed one and they could not tell a real difference in lap times.
golf ball shift knob... looking now, thanks!
Momo=rice? maybe it's just a regional thing around here and not where you are

one more question:
which strut bars fit the FRONT of the 16V scirocco? only ones for A1 chassis and NOT the jetta or GTI ones for the same model year?
thanks!

Upper strut bar, right? The Neuspeed bar is what I use, and I like it. As for Momo, the Monte Carlo steering wheel in the 12.6" size works well; good gauge vision and no hand-over-hand wheel turning on sharp curves.

1.What's the differnce, about $240.
2. I like cue balls myself.

3.I don't think steering wheels can be classified as ricey as long as you use restraint and don't buy on of those silly multicolored, buttoned, paddled, carbon fibred fashion victoms. I like Momo Corsa's and Sparco's. I have a 92 Euro Golf GTI 16V wheel and it is the smallest I would use at around 340mm. My friends have smaller and they suck. My car came with a smaller Grant and I could not wait to get ride of it. That reminds me, anyone interested in a good deal on a small Grant wheel.

James.

what size/colour/model is the Grant? is it so small that you can't see the guages? truth be known i'd like something a bit narrower than stock.
thanks!

296mm, outside to outside, black naugahyde, black three spoke design with a red 1/4" square horn button in the hole of the right spoke. One hole per spoke. Much smaller then stock.

There's a company (www.flameball.com) that sells a variety of interesting shifter knobs. Their best, at least IMHO, is the lighted flame ball - during the day, it's a black ball with orange/white flames, at night, the flames glow orange.
I've considered one for my tow vehicle but just haven't spent the money - maybe a Christmas present for myself...

What size is the stock wheel? Looking at a replacement myself...preferably something that doesn't touch my legs!
Thanks,
Gary
