The rears should be interchangeable between all engines from Audi A4 1996-2001 (B5 chassis) and VW Passat 1998-2004 (B5 chassis)
You just need to match on the following specifics:
- quattro/4motion
- ESP
So if your car has quattro and ESP, the donor car needs that same combo as well. At the salvage yard, you should be able to peek into the window to see if there is an ESP button on the dash or not.

Oh yeah I think you're right. The fronts are the same though. Weird how they mix and match parts like that.
