SD card issue

SD card issue (and USB)

I have run into a problem with my SD card in my new R-Line (standard audio system, not the Beats).

I have roughly 2300 songs on a 16 GB card. My '12 Passat with the Premium VIII stereo system could shuffle all 2300 songs.

Now I can only access a portion of those songs in the R Line -- everything is coming from the first third or so of the alphabet. Is there a limit on how many tracks this unit will read or number of folders? Anyone else run into this or have a workaround? Was not expecting this since it was seamless in the old car.

Since originally posting this, I formatted a USB stick to see if the same issue popped up. It did. :banghead:

I don't have this issue - but I have a different, strange issue. I primarily use the SD card slot also for my tunes, and I have various playlists (.m3u) in there so I can quickly navigate my music. Frequently, the system will x-out and not play the FIRST song in the play list, regardless what it is.

So say I have a playing that runs Song A, Song B, Song C ... then the screen will show -X-, B, C, and it will not play song A. However, if I manually browse to song A in the folder structure, it plays so it's not that the mp3 is corrupt.

If I rearrange the playlist on the computer and plug the card back in, say C, A, B, then the screen will show -X-, A, B, and not play song C.

If I rearrage the playlist on the computer and just duplicate the first song, say A, A, B, C, then the screen will show -X-, A, B, C, and play all three songs but only play A once because it won't recognize the first entry.

I can live with this, just adding a dud entry to the top of my playlists, but it's infuriating and makes no sense.

Given the random difference of our two occurrences I have to assume this is just sh!tty software on VW's part and not indicative of anything we're doing wrong. But I'm tentatively hopeful someone else here has found a genius workaround :)

I have about 9100 songs on my SD card and do not have this problem but, you need to make sure you don't have any non-supported files in the folders. I had a few .pdfs and other odd bits from special edition downloads and it would corrupt the entire folder, regardless to whether or not the actual music was the correct file format. If that's not the case, reformat the card and copy the music over again. If that doesn't work then maybe the system hasn't yet scanned all your files. If that's not the case, I really don't know

I was able to come up with a temporary work-around solution, but I am still interested in finding out what is going on with this car vs. the Passat.

I put all of the songs into a single playlist in iTunes, then placed them in a random order. I took the first 200 and put them into a folder on the SD card called Jetta 01, the next 200 in Jetta 02, etc. I selected Folder 01 and hit shuffle, and it will shuffle through the 200 songs in that folder. Then I can just pick any other folder and do the same so I can essentially mix all songs -- just in increments of 200.

Not quite as slick as with the other vehicle but it's fine for now.

Solved !!! Kind of.......

Ok, so I think I've solved this dilemma. My 2015 Beetle has an RNS315 radio and it is able to read all of my 2,500+ songs on my SD cards. After doing some research and trial & error, I found that these new Jetta radios can only read MP3 formatted songs. I looked closely at the my song list and found that any song listed as an M4A type cannot be read, only MP3's. So, I used iTunes to convert some of those songs over to MP3 and inserted the card into my radio only to find that they were still not in the song list. I went back to my computer and deleted all but 20 songs off of the SD card, and WALAH!!, the missing MP3 songs now appear. Now I just have to figure out what the song limit is. It's obvious that it can only take so many songs before it defaults to reading only the first few (in my case it's A-F). I will revert back when I figure out the limit.

My SD Card: SanDisk 32GB formatted to FAT32

I have 80 songs on my SD card in MP3 -- listed as "MP3 Audio File (VLC)". But tonight, I downloaded two songs from iTunes and put them on my SD card, and they have the .m4a, ie MP4 (listed as "MPEG-4 Audio"). But my 2020 Jetta S 6.5 inch Infotainment System doesn't read them.
However, my 2020 Jetta Owner's Manual, on page 190, Lists "Audio Playback in these formats:
AAC
ALAC
AVL
FLAC
MP3
MP4
WMA
So, I am perplexed at this.
I don't know who to contact at VW that could clarify this to me???

Definitely Solved !!

Finally got around to testing my theory and, yup...... it's confirmed.
These radios only read MP3 files and nothing else. So if you have a WAV or M4A file in your SD card, it will not read it AND it seems that there is a limit of APPROXIMATELY 1,000 song/files. As I stated previously, I have just under 3,000 songs so I'm in the process of separating them into 1,000 per card after having converted hundreds to MP3 format.

This seems to have worked for me, so I can't guarantee it may work on every one of these radios. Good luck.

Is this different as stated in the OM?

El-Vocho,

I don't think you will need three cards -- depending on the size of your card. The method I outlined above seems to be working just fine.

If you want to put 1000 songs in a folder and create three folders on the same card, you should be able to do that. I don't think you will be able to mix all 3000, but you should be able to select a folder and mix within that folder. When you feel like switching, jump to another folder and there ya go. If you want to be certain you are getting access to everything in a given folder, maybe limit it to 500 per folder and make six folders. I can confirm that everything is fine at 200 per folder.

I can also confirm I have never had anything besides mp3 files on my card in either car, so that issue was not in play for me. Just seems like this version of the software has a limit on how many songs it will choose from in mix mode.

You betcha!

If you were going to split 3000 songs onto three cards, you couldn't mix through all 3000 at once anyway. No sense swapping cards in and out if you don't have to.

I'll be curious to see how many songs can go into a single folder and the system will still mix through the entire folder.

I use Music Bee to organize my music. Currently have 4500 songs on an sd card. I have a few playlist which consist of 980 songs max in each list. Music Bee default sync structure is 2 folders, music and playlists....... Music folder (music /artist/album) Playlists folder (whatever you name your playlist). On my 19 jetta, music can be in multiple folders but the playlists cannot be in a folder, you will get an sd card read error. So my sd card looks like this,

Music folder
playlist 1
playlist 2
playlist 3
playlist 4
playlist 5

Using this layout, I can access all 4500 songs.

Hmm.............interesting. I'll see how I can separate my files using these techniques. My issue is that I'm not good at using my phone/Bluetooth while doing 70mph down the freeway. I'm used to having all of my songs at my fingertips and being able to easily scroll up down to find my desired song.
I have them all formatted by artist/song #/title (makes it easier to find a particular song or artist).

Thanks again for the tips.

What do 'ya know, it actually worked.......

Took your advise and over the weekend I split my songs into 5 different folders of 500 songs each and it actually worked. I can now access all of my songs by just switching from one folder to another. I have my music library neatly organized by Artist Name - Song # - & Song Title, which allows me to find my songs with the greatest of ease. I prefer using an SD card because my phone's Bluetooth keeps disconnecting every time I turn off the car and in order to hear the songs on my phone I have to take a minute or two connecting it to the car before I take take off from my drive way. With the SD card, I just pick a folder, find an artist, and let the music ring. Really happy now that I have my nearly 3,000 songs at my finger tips again.
Thanks again for the advise guys.

I'm new to using an SD card in a car's infotainment system.
So I've loaded 70 songs by various artists on the SD card.
I'm curious as to how you use the Infotainment system to find a song on the SD card easily.
The only option I know of is to scroll down, and down, and down, and down, to get to a song near the bottom of the list.

Also, I probably should have updated this a long time ago.

I use a 32 GB SD card. After a little experimenting, I ended up creating three folders with approx. 750 songs in each for my normal driving. Each month I switch to a new folder and listen in shuffle mode.

I also have a folder with about 20 complete albums that I might listen to on a longer drive, along with the A-Z folders if the urge strikes and I want to listen to a given artist. I am not familiar with Music Bee that Jetta 19 mentioned. I am a Mac guy and used iTunes (now called Music) on my home computer.

I had an SD card with over 5600 songs on about 350 group folders. The radio would only play music from folder named up to the letter C. What I did was combine the music in many fewer folders by using genre folders and different time periods. Well, that worked! I can now play all music on the SD card. It was a lot of work, though.
