95 Jetta GLX only has 78,000 well maintained miles and I'm looking at the THIRD serpentine or V belt replacement. True, I'm not mechanically minded. And I do love this car. But does this sound unusal??? I want to make sure I'm not getting strapped by belt with costs at the repair shop. How long should it take to replace?

Re: Serpentine belt (4Rings)

Damn 3 is real unusual
NEVER NEVER NEVER pay some bonehead to do this...It takes about 10 minutes to do yourself...here is the link for the serpentine belt wherer I got mine
http://www.parts4vws.com/catalog/product_detail.asp?PartNumber=021145933H

1) Remove air box
2) Insert a 8mm x 80mm bolt (or equivalent) into the threaded hole on the
top of the tensioner (located front, left, top corner of engine, as you
face the windshield) and tighten until belt becomes loose (and no further).
3) At this point, standing on the passenger side and facing the belt,
sketch a diagram of all the pulleys, and on which side of them the belt
travels. Also note what the orientation is of the ribbed protrusions (so
you don't attempt installing the belt upside down at first). Some vehicles
might have a belt diagram printed on a sticker in the engine compartment.
4) Remove old belt.
5) Install new belt per your sketch (or photo, etc.)
6) Check alignment and fit around all pulleys.
7) Remove bolt from tensioner.
8) Install air box.
9) Click the starter (without starting) over a few times to turn the engine
over a little. Reinspect the belt fit (it should be fine).
10) Start the engine, and observe belt. Job complete.

enjoy

Re: Serpentine belt (thelumpya2)

DIY it is way easy to replace the serpentine belt. I did it about 2 weeks ago on my car, and i have absolutely no mechanical expertise. thats weird that its gone out 3 times within 78k miles...check and see if the belt itself is loose around any of the pulleys or somethin

Damn! 10 minutes! Don't you have to remove any accessories or parts (ie. battery, hoses, etc.)?

Re: Serpentine belt (TheGoody)

I've replaced TWO on my '98 GLX. 1st one was in northern michigan after hitting a stick on a sand covered road (I was on a project, which required rally type driving!!
). The second just three months ago..
I have 106K on critter, and vw dealership charged me less than two-hundred for belt/labor. Not bad.

Re: Serpentine belt (ngoshawk)

its sooo easy. i thought it would be hard too, but my friend showed me how. even if you have never done it before, it shouldnt take more than a half hour. http://www.germanautoparts.com should give you a pretty good price on a belt.
just read this, let me know if it is helpful or needs any additional info:

Re: Serpentine belt (TheGoody)

Thanks for all the great advice. What a great forum this is. One day, I hope to be able to return a bit of modest assistance in appreciation.
Come to find out, the tensioner arm had broken off completely, taking the belt with it. For the parts, belt labor, this is little project is ringing in at around $300.
Someone asked about Eurospeed. I have not used them but hear they're good. Are they?
Again group, my thanks.
P.S. I'm going to follow up with VW of Amercia about this issue. Seems like the arm has been defective all along.
