SHARAN TO REPLACE EUROVAN IN 2003........

I need a little feedback on a well sourced rumor that VWoA is looking into bringing the Sharan van to the US in 2003 as a replacement for the Eurovan. This would be a stop gap vehicle as they wait on a feasability study for the Microbus. Would you buy one and what type of trim levels would fly here?

There is no way the Sharan will be brought to North America.

Not true.
VW co-developed the Sharan with Ford Europe, who sells a similar model in Europe as the Ford Galaxy. The two companies have an agreement not to bring either the Galaxy OR the Sharan to the U.S. so it ain't gonna happen.
I wish it would though. I would be all over a 1.9 TDI pumpe-düse Sharan with a 6 speed like white on rice. But we will never get it here.
Instead we will get a $35,000 Microbus with leather and chrome and a 230 hp V6 that gets 14 mpg.
No f-ing thanks http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
To answer your question, YES, I would buy a Sharan. If Volkswagen offered ANY kind of Sharan with a TDI and a manual transmission there is a 99.9999% chance I would trade my Jetta in on it.
I think the odds are better that I will wake up tommorow morning with Pam Anderson sitting on my face though.

Again....it is a rumor and it has strong roots. My news came from an unnamed VWoA employee just in Denver from Detroit, so I would rather here what engines and tranny combos rather than possibilities.

imo, the trim levels that would sell in the US are Comfortline (GLS) and Trendline Family (GLX)
The engines would be 1.8T (180hp) and 2.8VR6 24v (201hp).
Base price would be $23,000 for the GLS with 1.8T; and $26,500 for GLX with VR6.

Would be a little strange to bring the Sharan into the US when they're s-canned the VW Bus in Mexico and are replacing it with the Eurovan in January 2002.

$23,000 and 26,500 would be nice price points against the venerable class leader Odyssey. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Just out of curiousity, what is the Eurovan called in Europe?
Re: SHARAN TO REPLACE EUROVAN IN 2003........ (PhilHVW)

Caravelle.
Re: SHARAN TO REPLACE EUROVAN IN 2003........ (theinsider)

ya that'll never happen. wish it would though. they're pretty cool looking. it'd be fun to have a manual sharan when i get older and have a family
Re: SHARAN TO REPLACE EUROVAN IN 2003........ (theinsider)

I think VW needs to bring the Sharan here and why shouldn't they? The Eurovan is too big for and quirky for American tastes. The New Microbus looks to be a re-skinned Eurovan (with major improvements, of course), but they need something smaller and more car-like to compete here. Hence a smaller Villager/short-wheelbase Caravan/MPV/Sienna fighter would make sense.
This, I think, could be a "little sister" model to a larger Microbus.

Well usually those agreements end when the model is going to be redesigned. If VW is going to develop the next Sharan on their own, these rules will not apply. I UNDERSTAND they cannot now, but like all things legal, negotiations can be made.

Re: SHARAN TO REPLACE EUROVAN IN 2003........ (silverspeedbuggy)

I would LOVE to see a new Sharan here, but I don't think VW will bring a Microbus AND a Sharan AND their new SUV. Too much crossover there and smallish minivans aren't really popular or profitable anymore. The minivans that are sold here seem to get porkier and more feature-laden every year.
The SUV is guaranteed fat profit, so we KNOW that's coming. The Microbus seems destined for America and seems to have been designed with American tastes in mind, i.e. $35,000 super luxury vehicle with a powerful gas V6 and poor fuel economy.
I just don't see where the Sharan could fit in there as much as I wish it could...
I am sure they will keep selling in Europe though.
Re: SHARAN TO REPLACE EUROVAN IN 2003........ (theinsider)

I wondered the same thing, if the Sharan would replace the Eurovan. I emailed VW about this, but the answer was clearly no. That really puzzles me why VW does not sell the Sharan here. It is a far better fit in America than the Euro-centric Eurovan (even the name implies it!). It would compete favorably against the Odysseys, Caravans, Siennas, and MPVs simply because of its Germanic roots. VW is currently having a hard time pushing 300 Eurovans a month while Honda still has a waiting list on their Odyssey, and selling about 10,000 a month. VW is missing out on a huge opportunity here in my opinion. And what exactly is the reason why did Ford and VW agreed to not bring the Sharan/Galaxy over here?
BTW, VW's new Golf MPV due out by the end of next year will seat 7. Maybe this is the MPV VW is really considering, although it is smaller than the Sharan and thus makes even less sense in the US.
