My dad has a Series 1 and I hate it. Not that it is that bad a car, but just that one of my all-time favorites is the Cobra. I can't imagine why anybody would want one of these Oldsmobile powered rip-offs, when you could have a 427 original. What do you think? Series 1. Extreme performance car , or overblown ***** symbol?

Well, I think Carroll Shelby is one of automotivedom's greatest jackasses, so I'm kind of biased against him to begin with. However, I didn't think any of the Series 1 ever made it into customers' hands--anyone care to clarify?

Neither did I. Hey Big R, is your father Mr. Shelby himself?

Turns out the cars are trickling out of the Nevada factory, at least according to Shelby's website. 500 are to be produced, with prices ranging from $142,000 base to a hair under $200K. Oh, and for that price you get interior bits out of a Chevy Cavalier, an Aurora engine and a choice of one of eight colors from Shelby's palette. Stripes are extra.

Thanks, but at that price, I think I'll take a Maserati 4000GT and a Jaguar XKR and a vacation to Bora Bora, or a Ferrari 360 Modena in any damn color I want.

Some guy on the VCA board's friend has one and its not a small, but a huge overpriced POS according to him.....the reviews have been less than stellar as well.

The concept of the Series 1, the idea, was great. An American made, scratch built sports car with a carbon fiber body and the same Olds Aurora engine as the IRL cars. A detuned and streetable version, but the same motor none-the-less. The best part was he wanted to sell it for like 80k. I remember a quote from Shelby, something along the lines of "anyone can build a capable sports car and sell it for $200,000"
Of course now it uses the street car version of the Olds engine, cost way over 100k, and I hear the quality isn't the best...

No, he's not Carrol.
I'm glad to see a consensus building against the car. Now my dad is even wearing a Series 1 leather jacket to work.

One like this?

The carbon fibre-bodied AC 302 CRS with a 5-litre Ford V8 - it's only £38,950 (US$55,600).
And AC Cars do still make the 427, in MK III form - Price on Application

Wow. Someone who agrees with me. I feel like I belong....
I'd also add the late Smokey Yunick to the pile; Prolong dragged him to a meeting with us arguing about their product, and Smokey wasn't exactly a help to their case....
One thing though - I bet the Series I will be quite collectible - but then again, when you spend $140k for a car, it usually winds up being collectible anyway. I'd take a new Maserati and the pictured S2000 myself....

The problem here is that people who actually KNOW what they are doing almost always look like jackasses to those who don't. Especially guys who have been intimately involved with the subject for that long. And generally, like me, they don't care that the masses think they are jackasses.
Shelby actually built cars. Shelby got paid to take on the world, and won. He knows what he's talking about. Same with Smokey. If that's being a jackass, then sign me up. Until your record looks like theirs, I'll tend to side with them.

People that are right, and have a history of being right, tend to be pig-headed jackasses, because they can be. Henry Ford was probably more set in his ways than anyone I can think of off hand, and ya know, he did pretty good for himself.....
How dare you defile the name of Smokey

If you were an owner of a Cobra replica, you wouldn't be saying that. Currently, Shelby is suing not only all the Cobra replica manufacturers, but also all the owners of replicas that he didn't personally authorize. He wants those owners to either pay him an as-yet unspecified amount, or give him their car to be destroyed.
Oh, and if you were one of the first buyers who plunked down money on a Series I thinking it'd be only $80K, you wouldn't be saying that, either. Those original buyers had to sue to get their money back, even though the price has now inflated to double the original cost, and even though the first cars weren't delivered until years after being promised.
