I think Mk3s and Mk4s are the same, I 've seen pics of a Mk4 shiftknob in a Mk3.

Actually, they're not.
The MK3 is threaded and the MK4 is clipped on.
The reason why you see a MK4 knob on a MK3 shifter assembly is that the MK4 knob self-threads on.
