Value added tax. Have fun playing Germany's "try and figure out our tax system game, I dare you" game. I believe you have to pay the VAT (which applies to everything) in addition to a import duty. In addition, you have to pay for TÜV conversion and testing which can cost quite a bit depending on how much in the car there is to do (conforming headlights, taillights, cats, rear fog, etc.) I did the math a while back, I think it turned out to be that you only saved like around 1000€ importing a similar car from the USA vs. buying in Germany.

right hand drive is in England. There are a few rhd in germany.
I sent a Beetle back from Belgium to NJ. I used TransGlobal Logistics. 1500 and they took care of customs as well. Dont know about shipping one over to Europe. Military took care of all of that for me.

So.. I'm really starting to seriously consider buying a MKIV Bora or something over there and then having it converted to US Specs and shipped back to the US when I leave.
How much do you think it would all cost about, and is it at all rly worth it?
Thanks. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

The United States is one of the worst places to try and import a car. If you were importing TO Germany, it's not that bad, provided you've owned the car for 6 months and that it's new enough to pass TuV or Dekra inspection without too many faults.
To bring a car to the U.S. is a foolish endeavor. You will have to change too many things to satisfy DOT requirements. Only worth it if it's a rare car that you must have.

how does this make any sense?
OP, what's your story? Is this a permanent importation? Are you going to Germany for work? What's your status in Germany?
