Shocks in 2.0 vs VR ... same?

I am aware of the differences in the front strut assembly between the EARLY 2.0 cars compared to the LATE 2.0/VR6 cars... but what I don't know is, are the shocks the same? Could you swap a shock from a LATE 2.0/VR6 strut assembly into an EARLY 2.0 assembly, or visa versa?
