A short shifter reduces the 'throw', or the distance that the stick has to travel between neutral, and the gear gate. Depending on what type of short shift kit you get and what car you have, both forward/backward and side to side distances can be lessened. The advantage is that you have less of a distance to travel between gears, therefore decreasing your shifting times
