Should I Get Chipped Tomorrow?

885 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  OneQuickDub
I made an appointment for tomorrow to drop a fully loaded APR chip in my 03'GTI. My question is should I do it with only 400 mile on my brand new motor? The techs at this high end shop (ferrari, porsche, audi, bmw, etc, etc) say that it's totally ok, and just taking a look around their facility I would say they know what their talking about. I just wanted to see what you guys have to say?

i waited 5500 miles. its possible to break in with a chip it'll just be a little harder to stay off the boost.

Remember the old Nike campaign?
Just Do It.
But .. just stay in stock mode if you have a heavy right foot ... if you don't trust yourself until the break-in (pun intended eh?) period is over.
Re: Should I Get Chipped Tomorrow? (toecutter)

You should be fine...however you do realize APR's new flashing technology and other chip goodies are nearing completion? They are hoping to have it ready for Waterfest. If I were you I'd wait. It's like buying an 8-bit NES a week before the 16-bit SNES come out.

You can chip it but I would still go easy on the engine until the break-in period is over. You don't want to be kicking yourself in the ass later. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Should I Get Chipped Tomorrow? (hungalicious)

i'm probably getting chipped today as well, but REVO.
Re: Should I Get Chipped Tomorrow? (toecutter)

wait 3 more weeks for APR Serial ... I have waited 6 months for this chip already ... I am in no hurry so its different ...
but given that you just got your car wait ... break it in right ... get a sway bar first and then chip it

Right now all the APR EMCS functions are stored on a daughterboard that is soldered intot he existing ECU. This is obviously very invasive. APR has a technology where they can still encrypt all their software (for their safety) buy load it onto the EWCU by flashing the stock ROM module via the OBDII port under your steering wheel. It will have all the same functions as the current chip with the ability to hold several programs, FCE/TBA, security lockout, plus some new features that we don't know about yet. The best thing is this is completely undetectable by the dealer and they can alwyas flash a new stock program on. It is well worth the wait of a few weeks.
Re: Should I Get Chipped Tomorrow? (einsig)

Do you lose the programming if your battery goes dead or you have to disconnect the battery?
What kind of pricing are we talking about?
Any links?
Thanks!
Thanks for all the info guys. I think I'll wait for the new stuff and until then enjoy the first 1000 or so break in miles for now. As you can see I'm new to the dub scene so do you guys have any other mod suggestions until the chip. I've all ready done suspension and I'm waiting until next year for wheels, the stock 17's are fine for now. Thanks.

Re: (toecutter)

get stiffer motor mounts since they will help in getting rid of the wheel hop that you will get with more power
what kind of suspension upgrade did you get?
Another thing you will need is a new DV as the stock one will most likely not handle the new power

Once you have that done go with everything else there is
to get all the power out of your car.

Re: (toecutter)

you could always prepare for the chip and get an aftermarket DV because I'd say 8 or 9 times out of 10 the stock DV is going to fail and/or tear from the increased boost. (Forge or Hyperboost would be my suggestions)
A lot of people are going to tell you to do suspension first...I disagree wholeheartedly...it would be nice...but it's not a MUST. It's not THAT much power where you need a better suspension setup. I have an '02 GTI and have APR V2.0 program, ECS N75 valve, HyperBoost DV, EVOMS CAI, and a couple other small things. Suspension is still the stock sport suspension my GTI came with. Hasn't phased me one bit. I'd say three mildly inexpensive suggestions would be: DV, ECS N75 valve (http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/n75-info.html), prothane motor mount inserts to put the power to the ground a lot better. http://www.suspension.com/volks.htm - about 1/4 way down the page.
Prices you're lookin' at:
N75 - around $80
Mount inserts - $24 with shipping
DV - anywhere from $119-$169 probably.
Good luck!
