So, I am quickly approaching the 1,000 mile mark with my new Passat. A friend suggested that I should change the oil after the break-in period to remove any metal filings and other things that have worn a little during the break-in.
This makes sense to me, but I'd rather not spend the money if its doesn't make a difference. Every dollar saved is another dollar that can be spent on the ski slopes (if New England ever gets some snow).
Thoughts/Opinions?

Re: Should I get the oil changed after the break-in period? (jmhunt)

this whole thing had been discussed to death , but I found out from a vw mechanic with 40 years experience that vw uses a special low detergent formula oil to assist in the break in of the engine. It is recommended to leave it in for the full 5,000 miles (7500 miles in Europe)( I skipped my first scheduled free oil change because I only had 3400 miles on my car) before changing it so that the engine components will seat properly. There have been many people on these forums advocating changing oil at 1,000 miles as well. Putting synthetic in at 1,000 miles and everyone is free to choose as they will. I waited until at least 5,000 miles as have many of the people on these forums , each for their own reason.
by the way there is another thread with this same topic, in the future, a simple search will help you out by not making this the same type of post with the same topic for the 4th or 5th time for the day. I've seen that many topics on one subject in one day.

When I first picked up my car from the dealership, I asked one of the mechanics about bringing it back after the break-in period. He told me it wasn't necessary. If it's not called for in the maintenance log, then it isn't necessary. I didn't and so far it's ok. (knocking on wood now).

quote:

NO dont change the first oil untill your regular 5k service. There is a special additive in the oil.

Actually, it's that there are NO additives (no detergents) in the oil. It's pure dino oil to help the rings settle. If you change too soon, the rings might not settle properly causing oil burning until you finally get p1ssed enough to cough up the dough for a ring job. so, IOW, do NOT change the factory fill before 5k...this has been beaten to death.

All I can add is this. I drove the full 5,000 miles (Actually 5,100+) before the first oil change, and have had dealer changes (presumably with dino oil, since done "free") every 5,000 miles since. The car now has almost 19,000 miles on it, and it uses no oil. None. Level never moves on the stick between changes.
