I was trying to explain to a friend last night the difference between valves and cylinders, between 8 and 16vs and why one would be better over the other... but could not explain it well, other than the general "the more the merrier"
so, lets get started on this. who's first?

Only the first and last cylinders are running right, the cam lobes should not be directly opposed as in those middle cylinders!!!

Yeah, cylinders 2 and 3 have no power stroke.

an engine is basically an air pump, and the more efficiently you can pump air thru it the more power it will produce. the 16v motor allows more air volume in and out of the cylinders, thus increasing power.
super sweet graphic, BTW!

well technically it is incorrect since there is no block or cylinders. in fact...what's turning the cam?

The image at that link is really good.
Here is another one with simpler graphics.

To attempt to anwer why more valves are better: The whole goal is to get more air/fuel into the combustion chamber. A larger hole (port) and valve head will flow more air/fuel, but there is a limit to how large one intake and one exhaust valve can be for a given bore diameter. So by using more valves more flow area can be obtained in the space available. Also a four or five valve head makes putting the spark plug in the center easier which helps get a more complete burn of the air/fuel. Hope that helps and is accurate enough not to mislead anyone.

Nah, that is just like a old camshaft in the block inline 6 cylinder with timing gears.

Go here: VW Engines and click on the Flash 5. A window opens then click Engines 101.
Give him a Coffee straw and a Slurpee straw. Have him breath in and blow out through each. Ask him which one was easier. That should answer his questions.
