Since the Detailing Forum also seems ot be uncouncious...

I posted this post a few days ago and still unanswered so I figured there are a couple people with a pulse in the Golf/Jetta 2 area:
"I bought a 1985 GTi (8v) in October with original paint and I have been doing light surface work with an orbital grinder. So, I've been grinding and all and every small looking spot of rust I hit spreads out like a rash. My link to my web page with the car on it is at the bottom of my signature. There I have pictures of the beast on it to show you what I mean.
So, What I'm asking is, What do i do? I'm afraid that most of my hood is and some other spots on t car are infested with the cancer, but I dont know hardly anything about body work!
Should I strip the whole thing and sandblast or what? I'm lost as of now...
Thanks."

dude,
i have to say, you've opened up a can of worms by grinding.
on my 85 jet I started doing that one day
(rear fender, where that little piece of trim is supposed to go)
by the end of the day i had ground out all of the rust.. but I had also completely ground off the fender lip for the front half of the fender.
I then rebuilt the whole thing with some fiberglass, galvanized steel plating, and bondo.
Here it is ready to be painted:

it was a whole hell of a lot of work to get it to look decent..
and i still wasnt satisfied with the result so i covered it up with flares.
it was my first experience with body work and it took me four, 16 hour days to do everything
(pulled out a heavily dented left rear quarter and bondoed it smooth, ground right fender fiberglassed it, ground all rust holes off trunk and ass end of car, and debadged it, and painted it)

I don't think you should EVER do a single wiper mod without getting rid of your rust first!!

The funnt thing about tat is that I had no choice because the other wiper motor was stripped so I couldnt tighten the bolt to kep the wiper arm from flopping around and falling off the car. SO, I had to cut off the end with a hack saw to get the wiper arm off. It was total gayness
, But thats my story.
Trust me. If I could have dealt eith the rust first, I would've.
