Hello!! I recently bought a 94 2.0L motor so I can install the shortblock in my 86 GTI,and I noticed that it has a dual outlet manifold.I'd like to install this on my 86 head, but I have a question : is there a difference(performance wise)between the original exh. manifold(single outlet) & the dual outlet?? I plan on installing an Autotech 270 cam with this job,and was always told I have to open up the exhaust when installing a cam,so will this do the job?? Also I need to know who sells a changeover kit(86 1.8L head onto 94 2.0L block)so I can complete this job.I already have a dual outlet downpipe. Thanks for your help! Ken Robinson

5hp difference. I say screw the dual outlet and get a header. I have a brospeed one and LOVE it. I had the dual outlet from the factory but the header made a ton of difference.

Not just for the sake of argument, but I read in Performance Volks book that the late model single exhaust outlet and dual outlet flow about the same. It was the 83-84? Manifold that was stangulated. I have both manifolds regardless, but I am running the single outlet. Tech. Tun. seem to prefer the dual. I would like to see comparision flow charts.

For what it's worth, I'd say it's not worth swapping. Getting your old manifold and downpipe off is so difficult I would rather just let those horses stay in the stable. BUT, I already bought a setup and messed up my old stuff in the second attempt to get it all done. I now have logged in about 6 hours arguing with rust and stuck bolts and I've gotten nowhere. This weekend is my final try. I've learned from the work, but if I don't manage to get my damn manifolds off this time I'm going to turn around and sell the thing right back to someone who needs it.

You talking about the Watercooled Volkswagen Performance Handbook? It was mentioned in there that the European Manifold flowed about the same as the slightly larger late-model US manifold. The Euro is a dual, but the Late Model manifold can be sighted by the piece spilliting the exit. The 83-84 Manifold actually was the worst of them all and if you have it I would definately do the swap 'cause it's really rediculous when you look at it. Nothing like choking the chicken

dont screw around with the single outlet.
and if your going to do an ABA swap your going to need the A3 down pipe and manifold. The ABA is a few MM taller and it needs a longer downpipe.

Not in an A2. That about the manifold is one of the many errors in that book. It is comparing an A1 dual to a late euro A1 single outlet manifold. The A2 dual flows much better than the A2 single.

you are saying that you can make a 1.8 DP fit on a 2.0 ABA?
Really? I thought that techtonics even sold a longer DP to make it fit?
When I did my swap I just put the 2.0 DP and manifold on, they were in much better shape than my old ones.

Yes. That is for an A1.

i will also chime in here and say that you dont need a longer downpipe, and that the a3 manifold should fit (in european car they said it didnt) but i have used both styles of a3 manifolds on my jetta, tt has all the conversion peices.

What do mean by both styles? With and without the bars?

The reinforcing "bars" that some A3 manifolds have. I have heard 98+ but I think I have seen them on earlier engines also. They cover the intake ports on a counterflow head.

Re: Single vs. Dual outlet manifold on an A2 : is there a difference?? (hoodita)

OK Maybe I'll clear a few things up.The d/o exh. manifold & d/p is from a 94 2.0L 8V.I plan on installing this manifold on my 86 GTI 1.8L head, along with the 2.0L ABA block. The exh. manifold I was comparing it to was my old A2 single outlet.I eventually will install a 268/270 deg. cam in this setup. All of this stuff is going into my 86 GTi,which is my hobby stock car.I drive this car on a 3/8 mile paved oval track. That's the intended use of all this work.I also intend to lighten my flywheel, and my head is already shaved .030". Any other suggestions??Thanks! Ken R.
