SKIPPED 60,000 recommended maintenance - any DANGER?

846 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  spitpilot
Sup guys,
I skipped my 60,000 maintenance. Should I have NOT done this or is this ok? I mean I replaced the spark plugs at 40,000 already, change oil & filter as usual every 10,000(synthetic), add oil when low~which is like every 1000 or so...due to the known problem with VW engines losing alot of oil.
Well, anyhow...I have had other minor problems like the shifter sticking...I realize that I should lube the links under the hood and it worked! (WD40)
But it seems to wear off too fast....Any suggestion on the type of grease? (lithium or conventional grease) or is my clutch shot?

Hmmm. I missed mine too. I had other things I wanted to spend $400 on.
I checked the timing belt condition (wear limit 22mm, mine was at 22.5mm), changed the oil and filter, checked all fluids, replaced the dust pollen filter, ect. I even replaced the fuel filter at the dealers recommendation though it's not a scheduled maintenance item. The only thing I didn't do was check the airbag condition, whatever that means.
If you want, I'll send you the Service Circular that lists all the things that need to be done--the official VW version, not the dealers "customized" version. Email me.

If you can provide receipts for material you've bought and keep records of work you've done, you will not void your warranty unless you did something wrong. I admit that it's a harder case to prove, but it is not absolutely necessary for you to have the dealer do the work, unless the maintenance is provided free by the dealer.

About 60K miles is when I start thinking about water pump, timing belt (inspection doesn't always mean no breakin! and with interference engine that is EXPENSIVE beyond belief). Serp belt/power steering belt, fuel filter etc. Flush cooling system, change tranny & power steering fluids. Danger...more like risk of reduced performance and/or breakdown. If something craps out on you in the middle of nowhere on Sunday afternoon you'll regret scrimping on the PM! Change all this stuff on a Sat morn in your garage over a beer or two. Buy parts cheap online or thru local wholesale outlet and you can save big bucks and have protection against an UNK putting you out of action at an inconvient and usually expensive time and place!

Don't give the waterpump a second thought unless all you've done with the car for 60K is race it. I've put 126,xxx on two 16v GTi's and raced one solely for two years now and my water pump is sound. You want to do the timing belt @ roughly 60K just because that's the belts max. life expectency. The 2.0 IS NOT an inteference engine, so if you don't mind getting stranded when it breaks it will only cost a tow to a shop more than doing it now. I would also have all of the other belts done when the timing belt is done and replace the fuel filters. Other than that you're pretty much in the zone of ownership where you decide what kind of "not a new car" you want. 1) Do only what it takes to keep it safe and running or 2) you can do what I do and keep putting as good or better parts on it to keep an old dog "factory fresh". Granted, this MAY strain your love-life and or finances
, but new car payments are silly to me. And I've yet to find a new "pocket rocket" w/ as much character ( nice way of saying people think the design is just an ugly little hatchback or they love it ) as my A2. She's all bulbous AND chunky.

You're absolutely right guys!!
I guess I'm in denial thinking that it'll do fine because it's a VW.
My parents had the classic VW bug and they said that thing lived a life time without any thing wrong. But I'm afraid of changing belts and not being able to put it back together. It seems kinda tight in the engine compartment you know!..
I wish I had the confidence like you to change all these part myself on a Saturday morn. I really wish...the only confidence I have is changing my oil, adding wiper fluid, and adding gas; changing my tires. But not taking the belt off that maze of pulleys! I need help if u dont mind.

The only help you need is a Bentley manual (ebay or the dealer is where I got mine) and a little boost in confidence. If you can do the work you say, then you need to just take the plunge and hop in there. Just make sure you have ALL of the proper tools for the job AND parts. Forgetting a part that's needed only to put the old one back on so you can go get the new is NO fun. A Bentley is a MUST, esp. if you're wanting to save some cash. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

My coil pack went DOA at about 61,000. I was driving down the road and the I wasn't anymore. Had to have it towed and everything. While it was in, I had to do the timing belt as well. The guys at the service department said it NEEDS to be done. With towing and everything it was about $550. When you go in for a SCHEDULED maintenance, you can go to who you want. Because I was short notice and towing, I had to go to the. . . . . . . Dealership

why is it called a Bentley manual if it's a VW...
isn't better to take it to a dealer than a chop shop.
Re: SKIPPED 60,000 recommended maintenance - any DANGER? (spitpilot)

What does the manual say about the timing belt? The VW Service Circular for the AEG engine says to change the belt at 105,000 miles. I can't believe it needs to be changed at about half that distance. Maybe 90,000 miles to allow a safety zone, but 60,000?
For you guys recommending changing it at 60,000 miles, what was the factory recommended change interval?

My 2.0 is the ABA block, I believe. Belt intervals are 60K, hence my recommendation.
The dealer version (more in depth) of the Bentley manual is what everyone (dealer, tuning shop and myself) have used on my cars. Bob is the man!

Re: SKIPPED 60,000 recommended maintenance - any DANGER? (1sweet16v)

I'm not convinced that the timing belt can now go magically to 90K+ without a worry, when its the same belt that just a few years ago VW said needed to be changed every 60K. Methinks that VW has dropped PM so they'll look better on maintenance cost comparos in the magazines' long term testing!
PS If the 2.0L engine is not an interferrence engine, why does Bentley stress that it is and even cautions against rotating engine with timing belt removed! Bentley's are in library if you just need one section you can xerox for a buck or so!
