Re: SLC over heating (Vr6huntnV8s)

well, for one thing your h2o shouldn't be normally at 230. 190 is more normal. also oil temps at over 300 is ridiculus. the only time a VR6 should see 300 is if your at the track. your thermo may be stuck closed. you really don't want to drive with those high temps to much, you'll start to bake stuff. good luck!

Re: SLC over heating (ToddOne)

like todd said. thermo might be stuck shut. or your coolant pump(s) are not working....
those temps are rediculously high. good luck. a low temp thermo and fan switch is very cheap parts wise.

Re: SLC over heating (Vr6huntnV8s)

Theres a lot on the forum about VR6 cooling - use the search function. Most recommend a lighter coolant mix (15-25%) and lighter oil (10w-40). But I think you have other problems. Check to see that fan and aux water pump works. Get a new thermostat for water and fan. Mine runs cooler now that the UE recall was done, check with the dealer to see if your VIN is up to date with all recalls. I now run 220 on water and 250 on oil.

I was having the same problems as well, and what was mentioned was good information as well.
Also check the cap on your coolant as well. The rubber under mine was shot, and causing all sorts of problems as well.
It would be worth your time to invest in some lower temp thermo switches as well.

Re: SLC over heating (crazy-legs)

When I first got my C it was running at 230 all the time. I knew it couldn't be right, so I called the dealership and asked them. The pricks told me it was the normal operating temp. I guess since I already drove off with the car they could care less. I changed the fan thermo switch and that cured the problem. Most likely if it was anything else the temp. would continue to rise. Listen to your fans next time you drive your car and find out what temp. your fans are activated. My guess is they don't start up until the temp gets around 230.

Same thing happened to me. Bought my C about a year and a half ago, overheated in traffic the first day I brought it home. Luckily it was just a fuse, but after that it always ran at 230 degrees all the time. Found out that the low speed of the cooling fan was gone and the belt connecting the two fans was gone. I had to get a new fan motor to fix the low fan speed problem and a belt to connect the two. I also bought a 180 degree fan switch. Now my temps never get above 200 on a hot hot day in traffic. The fan belt came off (thanks to the stealership) and I noticed the temps back up to 230. The belt was still there but off the second fan. Put it back on and the temps run at 200 again. Right now in the cooler weather I rarely see above 180. Hope this helps. Oh ya to check your low fan speed turn on your AC and it should turn on. If not then jump the cooling fan plug, once for the high speed and once for the low speed. IF the low speed does not come on then your need a new fan.

Re: SLC over heating (aVR6d00d)

I used to regularly go above 230 engine and once got up to 308 oil. I panicked and asked the old corrado mailing list. With their advice, I did this one day:
replaced fan switch w/ low temp one
replaced thermostat w/ low temp one
flushed the radiator
Ever since, my car has run MUCH cooler and my mind is at ease.

You might have the wronge coolent in the rad, it should be from dealer only. The blue stuff. chec 4 leaks around the head it might be damaged or the head might be pited from wrong coolent.
good luck1 we all been there

The blue stuff (G11) is the "wrong" coolant. VW issued a TSB regarding the use of G11 with VR6s way back in 1996. Seems it was contributing to corrosion of the aluminium head. G12 ONLY for a VR6. Personally, I use a mix of 85% distilled water, 15% G12 and a bottle of RedLine WaterWetter.
