Should make an interesting project. 2.0l 8v 'B' motor, early EMS cams, EMS short-ratio steering rack and EMS leather steering wheel, MSS exhaust, a short and close 4-speed, mostly gutted interior... this thing is a blast!
Here it is sitting next to the SPG -

Re: So I got a Saab 99... (turbo_nine)

I had a '78 99. Unfortunately, it had the Triumph engine in it (I got so good at pulling the engine that I could do it in 1.5 hours). The car was a blast though. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

My uncle had a '78 99 that rusted. It rusted so much that one day the rear axle pivot points broke

Who the hell put a Triumph engine in a '78? They stopped using those in '72, replacing them with a 2.0 "B" motor.

Well, I'm confused, then. It was odd. Slanted, water pump mounted in the top of the block, Schwinn bicycle chain for a timing chain (it broke - duh), the oil pan was part of the tranny. Was this a Saab engine?
Edit: I guess it must've been a '72. (God it sucks getting old)

That describes both the Triumph and the Saab "B" motor. 16 valve engine was derived from the 8 valve "H" engine which was derived from the "B" motor which was derived from the "Triumph" engine which was derived from 1/2 of a Stag V8. If yours was a '78, it was a B motor.

The light weight and torquey motor... it just pulls to redline, shift, keep pulling. It's great! I'm thinking it's a short wheelbase so maybe it'll make a good autocrosser.

Re: So I got a Saab 99... (WolfsburgTekniques)

It's not. They're about as tastefully done as racing stripes get though, in the factory S&R (Saab Sport and Rally) style. Many 99EMSs came with stipes that ran from the front edge of the hood, under the side windows and back up to the roof but they were more subtle.
The ex-motorcycle racer who previously owned it didn't know who put the stripes on either but it was probably the guy he bought it from seven or eight years ago. The car was described to me as a GL-EMS because it was originially a GLE 2-door but it has since had all the EMS (Electro-Manual Special) goodies bolted on. The engine bay is rather clean and it has about 117k original miles on it... not bad, these things usually have sky-high miles by now. It's so sweet - a very british sound from the exhaust but the engine itself makes a very Swedish whine at speed.
You can't tell from the picture but there's a fresh set of Nokian Hakka NRW's in the back. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
