So, there are no speedlimits.

Let's say that they suddenly removed all speed limits from limited access highways. Let's also say that you are not a testosterone enriched wannabe racer.
What would be your average crusing speed?
For me, in my car, I think I'd be happy putting around 90-95mph on average. It's the top end of comfy driving in my car.
How about you?

Well, I find that 80 is a good speed for me. Balances speed, fuel economy and how fast things happen. I think the number drops by 1 mph for every year I get older though.

Oh, but I am - really!

Really - probably 75, although the Passat has a lot more in it. (Note to any NY state law enforcement: the following is fiction only.) I usually cruise around there on some of the parkways here during my daily commute, which amounts to basically blending in with traffic. It's really quite enough for me, given the variables of traffic, sun glare, people merging, etc.
Even on the open road, I just find that driving over 80-85 requires more concentration and stress than I really need. Anyway, hitting a deer at that speed wouldn't be good - for me or the deer....

Yeah, I think I would cruise between 90-100 mph. It's a comfortable speed on our nice new Trans Canada Highway here in NB. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Balls to the wall, 6500 rpm in 5th gear, giving it all it's got, shooting nitrous, so about 70 miles per hour....

BWAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHHAAAAAA!!!!!!! Go Honda GO!!
I love that you can laugh at yerself, Y2K...
For me and Lola, around 70 cruising 494 is good for me... Brigitte is an 80 mph car. That's where she settles, that's where she's comfy, that's where she stays....

My old 240 was at home at 80. My old Porsche made 80 feel like 60

Don't get me wrong, she makes 143 feel like 80, but that's top speed
Hypothetically speaking, of course....

Re: So, there are no speedlimits. (Dutchman)

Prob 85 to 90.
Re: So, there are no speedlimits. (SidRocco)

it really depends on the road. Assuming no sharp curves, good visibility, and no ridiculous terrain, i'd cruise at about 85-95mph, but would pound the gas on the straights. If I were just cruising the average interstate (we'll say 81 in Virginia), 80-85 is the fastest yuo can safely go.
Re: So, there are no speedlimits. (mutcth)

A friend of mine who is a civil engineer for NYS roads/bridges etc said the roads are designed for 75mph.
feels like you can go a lot faster than that though on NY throughway
Re: So, there are no speedlimits. (Silly_me)

I'd say 60mph on regular roads during the day, 50 at night (lots of deer around here), and always 90-100mph on highways, etc.
Hey, just about what I do now

I tend to do about 70 - 80 on the Baltimore beltway... and I'm getting passed all the time.

Ditto
- you haven't driven until you've gone over the Mountain over TT, with bikes buzzing all around you at over 100mph - just don't go against the (clockwise) flow!!

As a rule, during the rest of they year I might go 75-80mph on the open bits, but as it's all single lane, basically minor roads it can get a bit bouncy. Followed a friend in his SportPack-equipped '97 Cooper, and he was bouncing all over the road at about 70!

Re: So, there are no speedlimits. (nokona)

85-90 sounds about right. I do 75 now and I think that's slow. 85 would be decently fast but without much more concentration.
Re: So, there are no speedlimits. (nokona)

I agree. When I lived in Germany I had a BMW 318i and an Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce 1.5; neither felt very comfortable over 160kph, 100mph. When I vacationed last year in a rented Audi A4, my normal cruising was 160 - 180kph, 100 - 112mph. Faster for short bursts, especially when the wife was sleeping!

Wow... I thought there would be more "flat out" claims on here. Nice to see most people are realistic.
For me, it would depend on the other drivers. If they are smart (like German Autobahn), I would probably have no problem going in t he 90-100 range. For Vermont drivers, I feel comfortable doing 80 (which is what people do anyways). Of course the car feels comfortable cruising at 120, but I certainly don't.

Re: So, there are no speedlimits. (Silly_me)

I picked up my Porsche in Chicago...I did a lot of driving at about 120-130 MPH on the way back to Vegas.
I'd drive around 100-110 in the 944, about 80 (if it makes it) in the Prelude.
