SoCal newbie question - why no 93 octane?!?!

754 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  hman
Why is 91 octane considered "super unleaded" around here? My car is used to a steady diet of 93, and I think I'm hearing some pinging under load before the computer dials the timing back - something I would rather avoid. Where in the Beverly Hills/Hollywood area can I get some good ol' 93 octane?

quote:

When the state bans the use of methyl tertiary butyl ether, an additive that boosts octane but also pollutes ground water, refiners will spend more to make less gasoline. Problems buying enough additives could create shortages that push prices up as much as 50 cents per gallon temporarily.
Premium will be the toughest to blend, because making a 92 octane without MTBE requires scarce additives. State energy experts asked refiners to consider changing premium's octane now so that the switch to MTBE-free fuel won't be as disruptive.

And Everyone call's us Pollution Nazi's in this state

Thanks for the info, folks...
So my question now is, what are people with chipped 1.8T's doing for fuel? Are your cars having any problems with the 91, or no? I'd like to see how this is affecting the local enthusiasts...

My Car still works. If you're concerned about octane read this.

Re: SoCal newbie question - why no 93 octane?!?! (MulletMaster5000)

Is that the one that's right near the onramp to the 101...right off Agoura road?

Hman - thanks again on your site reference, very helpful. Again, though, I want to see what some are people are experiencing with the 91 octane on their chipped 1.8T's...

OK, I read the article, has anyone done this? Or know of anyone that has increased the octane rating on their car from doing this?

93? not here... we get the oxygenated 91, whatever that is... though I have found a mobil (in Korea Town, LA) that has 92 octane, too bad it's ghetto as heck!
And there are certain 76 stations that sell 100 octane "race fuel" for (as far as I've seen) 4.95 per gallon... crazy expensive....! But you *do* feel the difference, I guarantee it!

I've got a chipped 1.8t and have been running on 91 octane for 8,000 miles and on 92 for about 2,000. I didn't feal a difference
