Some observations and questions.....

Am I supposed to have a big hole in my tranny where I can see what appears to be my torque converter spinning? This is slightly disturbing. I saw this when poking around under the hood last night.
Oxygen Sensor. I'm sure mine needs to be replaced. Where is it, and is this part expensive on VW's?
Also noticed I have an exhaust leak from my manifold. Can I get a replacement part that will up my performance but not make it sound like a Riced out Honda?
I want to fix my odometer and trip meter. Can anyone point me to detailed instructions on how to do this?
Thanks for dealing with my early morning ramblings.
Chris

Oxygen Sensor. I'm sure mine needs to be replaced. Where is it, and is this part expensive on VW's----catalytic converter

One you can replace the studs on the top. What do you have? A 16v or an 8v?
Re: Some observations and questions..... (JettaTournament)

I have an 86 Jetta GL, I think, no wait, I'm sure that my car is an 8 valve, cause the thing just won't rev.
I got to thinking, maybe that's my "timing hole"? It looks like it's supposed to be there, I've just never seen anything like it.
Thanks for the tips.

I'm not positive, but it sounds like the timing hole to me. Usually, a big green plug is threaded in there on a manual.
Try http://user.icx.net/~penclnck/gauges/odometer.htm for tips on the odo.
I'm not sure what manifold is on there now, but if it is secured with 2 big c-clips, then you can upgrade to the 'dual outlet' manifold, found on the GTI and GLI cars. However, if you have the single outlet manifold (2 c-clips), then your current downpipe will not work with the dual outlet manifold, and you'd have to change downpipes too. I think your current downpipe is one piece with your current cat, so now you need to either cut and weld, or replace the cat and downpipe, and mate it to the rest of the system, so it starts to get expensive. One option, if you can, is to use the dual outlet VW manifold, then get a TT race or euro downpipe...longer, and it omits the cat. Then fit that onto your current exhaust, until you can upgrade later.

Top center of the bellhousing, near the engine block? That's the timing hole alright. if you hook a timing light to the #1 cylinder you should see the advance mark in there. The torque converter isn't a single spinning thing btw, it's a fluid coupling that's part of the design of the AT. You couldn't "see" it without seeing a whole lot of ATF splashing around.
*edit: oh yeah, 02 sensors can be gotten for under $40, though you might have to get a Bosch generic/universal and move the housing over from your old one, and solder the wires yourself. It should be on top of the cat. check to make sure you have a 1 or a 3 wire before you go searching for one. Stealership will want 150 or so for the correct one. Try pottermans or adirondack or something.
