Hi guys, my name is Thomas and I'm a very poor college student from New york.
Im looking to purchase my first car this summer, and my first option is a 95-98 Jetta.
I have some basic questions that I think you guys can answer for me.
Some of the Jettas Im looking at have over 100,000 miles, is this a cause for concern? If i purchase one of them, am I looking at a costly parts replacement in order to get the thing running reliably?
How much is a 96ish Jetta GLX worth with around 70ish to 80ish k miles? Some of the dealers are asking up to $5k for their 100k Jettas, and some of them aren't even GLX!

Whats the biggest rims that I can fit on a MK3 jetta? The Jetta 3 just looks so dorky stock, I can also lower it without much trouble right?
What is the main difference between MK3 Jettas in GL, GLS and GLX? I know GLX is the v6 one, but whats the real difference between the GLS and GL? Should I stay away from GL's?

Thanks for answering my questions, or just taking the time to stop and make fun of me.

If I were rich I'd just buy myself a 2004 GLI and show it off here.
Someday... a boy can dream right?

Re: Some Questions about the MK3 (Blodia)

so u'd rather own an MK4 than an MK3 but will settle for MK3 (the dorky ones) because u can't afford MK4...
"no soup for you!!"
edit: sorry.. I was just bustin' balls

Re: Some Questions about the MK3 (trixx)

i dont think that was ever stated.
Ok, 100,000 isnt rare in a Jetta, but i found mine with 65000. You shouldnt have worries i dont suppose.
The GLX is V6 (ok well inline), the glx is leather, i like the glx.
GL is cloth no spoiler, 2.0
GT cloth spoiler 2.0
the others im not sure of, those are the only i've ran into.
for a Jetta with 70,000 i would pay 8000 i suppose, but my bank booked my 1997 with 65000 at 11,080.
you can go as big as you wish on rims, i have seen 19's, and lowering is no problem, most people's cars around here are slammed to the point of rubbing and have had their fenders rolled.
If you have any questions ask away, im still new to VW's but im always studying.

autos = automatics, not cars in general

i picked up my '95 golf with 74K for $3700...that was a hella good deal. If u go to a dealer, go to http://www.kbb.com and get a blue book price on the car...then aim for a few hundred dollars below that (depends on the car's condition) then barter away...one more pointer, don't buy a car that's already slammed, rims, major engine work, etc...that's usually a sign that the car was driven hard. my friend bought one and he blew a head 2 months later

So I should stay away from Automatics?
Can anyone else offer some opinion on this. I haven't heard of VW's having problems with auto transmissions.

Re: (Blodia)

you wanna find a manual and take it for a test drive to make sure that nothing is wrong with the clutch etc... and never buy a MODDED car because you really dont have any proof of what was done to the car, for example the car might have a chip that is made to run on a high octane fuel, and if you run on a low octane fuel you might have some problems
so buy a BONE STOCK car http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
