Yeah, I was actually thinking of replacing my 1.8T Passat with a W8 (wagon, 6-speed)...but that color....no thanks.

you'll spend 10 grand in maintenance just to keep the thing on the road for 3 or 4 years

even so, still kind of want.

It is actually quite a bit quicker, esp with the 6-speed. (Note also that the weight is chassis stiffing, the w8 doesn't weight much more than the v6)
It is a disaster maintenance wise though. If you can't get an extended warranty, which i don't think you can nw, you don't want this car. If it doesn't have the cam tensioners replaced (which cost more than a subaru engine), pass as the OEMs will fail.

I seem to remember that auto vs. auto, the W8 and V6 are pretty much neck and neck. The 6spd W8 is a good bit faster, but also more rare.
