possibly the head of one of the cross shaft retaining rivets pounded flat somehow?
edit: was looking at the pic on a laptop with a 12" monitor... now that im home i see it well though

Nope, Vic, real US Government-issued hard currency (and I emphasize 'hard', as in solid, not very bendable, etc...)

drill a hole in it and hang it from your rearview mirror, as a little reminder

so is everything okay now? did it cause any major damage?

maybe the P.O. took the car to a {insert your favorite national automotive maintinence chain here} and let the monkey's change the oil...... manager wanted to make a little extra $$$ when the car came in with the owner saying there was a clunking sound -->> (draw your own conclusion)
