My '99 GTI is mostly squeak and rattle-free. But if the road is the least bit bumpy, I get a noise from the dashboard - sounds like a duck quacking: "ak-ak-ak-ak..." Drives me nuts.
A service rep at Campbell-Nelson VW (Seattle) gave me the tip that localized the noise. There is a rubber or plastic gasket where the dash meets the windshield glass. When the body flexes, this material rubs on the glass and quacks. If I pull the dash away from the glass, the noise ceases. The service rep told me that some people have managed to silence this noise by jamming some felt (or other material) into the crack between dash and glass. Sound like it's worth a try, but I'm wondering if I can get the same result by spritzing the crack with some silicone, or perhaps that Tiefenpfeger stuff. My concern is that the liquid might migrate up the glass and create a stain, or attract dirt, etc. I've had bad experiences with Armorall on a Scirocco dash, and don't want to go there again.
Anyone else come up with solutions for this?
