The 1979 was the last Trans Am/Firebird to have a Pontiac engine, if I'm not mistaken. THe 6.6, right? Well, I've liked this car for a while, now.
One of my projects that I'm looking into is building a 79TA for drag racing. Fat slicks and nitrous, that's the plan. But what kind of internals are necessary? Besides tougher pistons and linkage.
Thnx

Get a good rebuild kit with moly rings, forged rods and nitrous pistons. They'll have a dropped ringland to keep em sealing longer. Dont skimp on the bearings, and run like 20 weight motor oil to cushion the bottom end better. Run a colder plug than normal, and learn to read plugs, start rich and tune from there. Keep the timing lower than normal.
Basic nitrous stuff that applies to any engine.

Since it's an older carb engine, rather than a feul injected engine, how does that factor in?

Well in my opinion, its harder to tune a carb engine because you dont have those helpful short band O2 sensors to tell you your air-fuel ratio.
But, setup the carb a little rich, and start with a small shot. Check the plugs, make sure they look good. Better to tune rich and run a little slower than tune lean and blow a hole in a piston or blow a head gasket.
How much spray you plannin on runnin?
