speedo problems

after driving on the highway last night my speedo started to do crazy things on me, it will wave and then drop to 0 then it would jump to 60-100 then 0, at the end of the trip it would stay close to 0.....anyone had a problem like this??? its a 96 jetta gl auto

same thing happened to my car after the backlighting etc. got changed. Had to buy a new gauge cluster.

I had similar problems in my old Dodge Aires (don't laugh). On that car it turned out to be a bad speedo cable from the sensor to the meter, that was causing the sensor to keep getting stripped out (I went through at least one replacement before I found it). I think it would either be the sensor or the cable, but I'm not sure how the speedo system works on the mk3s.

5speed: Sensor is located right on top of the tranny believe it's a three-prong sensor, just behind the reverse sensor
Check the connections on the back of the cluster
