I'm taking off my tranny, but can't seem to get the speedometer cable off. I took off the allen key bolt next to it. I don't want to break anything, do I just pull on it till it comes out, or do I pry it out with a screwdriver? It's not very clear in the Bentley.
thanks

Re: Speedometer Cable (Tornado2dr)

Thats a tough one.. you have to pull the steering wheel, and whole bezel, then unscrew the gauge cluster, and reach behind and clip it back on, its a bitch fitting your hands back there, and VW made it nice and easy by cutting sharp ass angles on the zip ties that hold wiring to gether..
some times its easyer to pull the steering colum cover off and reach up through there.
good luck, hope it didn't break the back of the cluster where it clips on..

Re: Speedometer Cable (12 Inch Club)

You're lucky. When I pulled the cable out of my 83, the gear popped off and fell in the tranny. Fortunately, I could see it and managed to get it out. One other guy on this forum had the same thing happen, but the gear floated away. He ended up starting the car and peeking in the hole. There was enough oil movement with the car in neutral to get the gear to float by the hole so he could snag it.
Wiggle it a lot when you put it back in to get the end of the gear to find its hole.

LOL

good story!
luckily mine just came righgt out, and went right back in. no problems. i put a bead of high temp silicon around the plate to make sure no fancy synthetic oil gets out.
"There was enough oil movement with the car in neutral to get the gear to float by the hole so he could snag it." i can just picture this. "there it is...get it...no wait, i missed...oh wait there it is again...quick grab it!"

Hmmm...on my MkII Scirocco, I was just under the dash earlier (with the parcel trays removed) and I could look up and see the speedo cable, pretty as you please, and I thinks to myself that it'd be a LOT easier to detach it from below than try to shove my big mitts behind the cluster from the front... don't know if this is an option on an A2, though...

Just FYI y'all, even in neutral, if the gears are moving you can do a number on your finger...
Had a friend told me a good story once about an "expert" checking gear oil on an aircooled VW transaxle while the car was running once and getting the tip of his finger pinched, blood everywhere. Dunno if its true, but I believe it.
take care,
Steve

Yeah, if your foot's off the clutch pedal and the engine is running then the trans. input shaft is spinning. Of course in neutral the other shaft isn't turning unless the car's moving - now that'd be a trick to have your finger in there at that point!

On the A2's you can take out the left heater vent, move the duct a bit and just get hold of the cable through the vent hole.

You can't get it out with your finger. The hole is just big enough for the gear. You have to use one of those metal claw things.

Some of the later cars used an O-ring as well which actually seems to keep the transaxle from leaking (much). This was probably the case in this car - I swapped motors in my Scirocco and was baffled when the speedo cable was stuck fast to the trans. After prying it out, lo and behold, a crusty 13 yr old O-ring.

Very true, forgot to think for a second and realize the speedo cable ran by the output shaft.
either way, I try to be careful where I stick my finger when a car is running
into a transaxle wouldnt be my first idea...
take care,
Steve
