why did you replace the speed sensor? Did you have a fault? Also, does your instrument cluster have the VDO logo in the center?
Re: speedometer works off and on??????? (TRUEBELIEVER)

had test done said was bad .also yes has vdo logo in center why?
Re: speedometer works off and on??????? (golfguy77)

well you just paid for a speed sensor when you didnt need one. Guarantee if you scan your car right now you'll have the same fault. That fault stores automatically when the car is off because the sensor isnt sensing Rpm. Once you start the car the sensor starts working. That fault will always be stored in early mk3 cars. The VDO clusters had alot of problems, get a new one or used one from a junkyard. Guarantee this is your problem. I work for vw so if you have any more questions lemme know http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I get the same code dude, so dont think he's a tard for replacing the sensor. If it's not the sensor, it's the instrunment cluster.
I too have replaced the sensor, and mine's a '97 (mine's automatic tho). Is yours auto?

Go check your fault memory, im sure your speed sensor fault is back, because it never actually goes away. I didnt say he was a tard either
Re: speedometer works off and on??????? (TRUEBELIEVER)

My fault never went away, as a matter of fact, the fault is ONLY there because I haven't replaced the cluster (solving the problem). After that, I'll be more than happy to check if it's there or not.
Also, I wasn't meaning that you called him a tard, but he's definitely not one for doing what 90% of us would do with that fault code (replacing the sensor FIRST, being the cheapest possible solution).

If I'm reading that right, every car would have that fault.

Re: speedometer works off and on??????? (PBWB)

In theory you are right, as we all know vw's are retarded sometimes and thats the way the crazy germans engineered it. Dont ask me why, it only happens on the mk3's
Re: speedometer works off and on??????? (TRUEBELIEVER)

could it be the chassis ground? someone told me to check it out because my speedo works and then stops working when i go over bumps in the road.
nobody ever told me where too look though, anyone know where this ground is located?
thanks
