Only when my engine (8v digi2) is cold or any time at idle, there is a wreee, wreee, wreee, wreee, wreee sound coming from somewhere around the altrenator. Is there a bearing inside that pulley that could go bad?
Also, Since replacing my brakes there's an itermittant squeak from the passenger side one, and only when turning to that side. I'm confused.
Any ideas - without a stereo (waiting on a wire from VWmafia) they're driving me insane.

Re: Squeaking, 2 places (nicholasp)

i would guess that the squeak around the alternator is coming from your water pump. it could be the alt, but water pumps generally start squeaking after some time. apparently yuo are supposed to replace it if it makes noise, but it is still pumping water, so i never really understood why.

hmm, water pump... that doesn't sound fun... I'll just keep an eye on the temp gauge and make sure it's still working and put up with that noise... anyone have any thoughts on the brake one?

an easy way to "temporarily" fix the squeaking is to go to a parking lot and go as fast as you can in reverse.. then stomp on the brakes, just short of locking them up.. then do it going forwards.. it seems to re-seat the pads on the calipers.

If it is your alt. making the noise you there is two bearings in there that are replacable. Where the rotor assy. shaft goes thru the case there is a bearing on each end. The one on the pulley side is a ball bearing the other could be a needle bearing. Get a stethoscope (SP?) and probe around to see just where the noise might be.
