Squeaking seat syndrome - any know cures

496 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  a2vwnick
My driver seat is starting to squeak when I more around in it, and it's starting to tick me off.
I expect this is something inside the seat and I'm just going to need to deal with it, but is there *anything* I can do to improve this problem at all?
TIA!

haha my dads jetta seat did this...for about a month then the internal frame of the back broke. he drove it like that for some time, he said it was rather uncomfortable too. go figure. if you only knew my dad.

That sucks when that happens. Trust me. The exact same thing happened to me and it is very uncomfortable. I finally now have some different seats in the GTI. As for the question. You might check that all the bushings or whatever you want to call them on the seat rails and the posts on the bottom of the seat that goes into the rails are all greased up and are in good condition. Other than that kind of thing not much you can do.

Good call - the seats *are* kinda stiff to moove... that's a good start.
Thanks. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

The grease likely won't help much. The seat squeeks like that because a weld broke internally, mine do it too. It's just something we have to live with

Actually you dont

That happend to my seats before I got recaros.. I guess the seat making steel was brittle back then, because my seat cracked near both shoulders. The seat would actually sway diagonaly.
I pulled the upholstery/springs/twinecrap off the frame and took it to my local muffler shop.. the guy did it in about 2 minutes with one of those line feed welders.

While I had one off I decided to swap the foams on the drivers and passengers seat. That held me over until I got Recaros.

That's cool... how did you get them apart though?

Re: Squeaking seat syndrome - any know cures (Fahrfrumluzin)

It was fairly easy once the seats were out of the car.. these were the old base model 85 seats.. the ones with burlap with a vinyl back..
Basically I just found the spot where the upholstery was hooked on for the seatback, undid the hooks, and peeled the seatback off like a condom

IIRC while peeling it off there are some hooks to undo, but if you have needle nose pliers they shouldnt be a problem..

my drivers seat used to do this, with the up and down motion it squeaked... with a passenger in there,
was ever so irritating but it just went away

haha, short of ripping the seat apart and welding it, WE HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT!

I would get new seats before going through that sort of effort though...

the rails are supposed to be greased? whoa...im going to make a run to my local auto parts store tomorrow...what kind of grease to i use? is silicon grease spray good?....
Re: Squeaking seat syndrome - any know cures (Clone_number2)

My Recaro seat base moves a little and squeaks as well. I've pulled it out and looked for broken welds to no avail. Irritating.
Re: Squeaking seat syndrome - any know cures (SeattleGLI)

I'm not looking at a seat right now, nor can I remember exactly how my recaros are set up...... (I don't have this problem BTW)
there may be a "woven" part on the bottom where there are a handful of wide straps that cross eachother. On the ends of these there may be springs or some sort of metal mount that allows it to be stretched and connected to the actual frame. You may want to investigate around there.

Actually, I have a seat problem, but I think it is of a grander scale. Or maybe a I have a bolt loose. On the last canyon run I noticed under hard braking, particulary when trail braking, the seat would piviot forward. Having my harnesses on keeps things under control, but an anoynace none the less.
