I started with 40. Should I do a little more? Or is it okay to move on to 80?

You can see more of the rough spots here. All in all it's going pretty smooth so far.
More updates later.

im actually in the process of doing my manifold and i used 80 grit to start and then moved on from there. I also did as much as i could with a 5inch orbital sander with 300 grit on it and it made things alot faster.

You need to go untill all the scratches are gone..then move to the next grit. If you move to fast, you will have to go back when you hit 1000 as these will not come out.....

keep goin... all the scratches need to be the same at the end of each stage... for example in this pic see how there are still some darker spots? they need to be gone...

...at each stage just make sure all the scratches are consistent and youll be golden http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Those bastards are pretty deep. I'm kinda worried about the amount of material I'll have to take off, to get them out.
Thanks for the replies, I guess i will continue with 40 grit till all blemishes are gone.
BTW, can anyone reccomend a technique when I get close to the flange??
