stock 96 golf 2.0.. first upgrade?

Hey guys, I just picked up a stock 96 Golf 2.0. I got it very cheap from a good friend ($1,000), so I have some money to dump into parts. I have about an extra thousand to spend on it. Any idea on what a good upgrade would be? I am looking for minor performance upgrades and major cosmetic upgrades. Thanks.

spend 500 on some cosmetics (coils maybe) and save the other 500 for the **** thats gonna break.

spend most of that money on tune up parts and maintenance parts.
Basic things. Just do a rough check of the engine.
-Oil change.
-Coolant flush. Refill with g12 i think? or g11 can't remember for mk3's.

-Check your plugs and wires. Are they intact and in good condition?
-Any leaks ?
- Hows the rust?
Spray the bay down with some engine degreaser and call it a day.
Transmission.
-Gear oil change.
-check shifter bushings
-is your clutch engaging?

Use the rest on upgrades. Suspension > exhaust > drop filter > wheels.

def maintenance first...
Get yourself some coils and exhaust then start savin for some dope wheels and you got yourself a nice car...
Keep an eye on any rust also

also if your looking to save some money after maintenance for suspension get some racelands or rokkors ya there not the best but when your on a budget it will get you somewhere for now. Get a TT exhaust, germanautoparts.com has them for 225 i think and with your extra cash get some wheels.

#1 Bentley VW Factory Service Manual for MKIIIs $55 brand new from amazon.com
#2 Catch up on maintenance schedule, including timing belt, thermostat, oil change with German made filter, Genuine Bosch or VW distributor cap and rotor, Bosch Silver spark plugs, new air filter.

A few of my favorite first time mods.

-Rear sway bar (buy used, i got 1 for cheap under 100)
-a strut bar wouldnt be a bad idea but sway is much more noticable
-magnaflow SS 2.25" cat-back, $400
-maybe a VR6 lip, Get one from dealer $160
-Coils can be had with that budget.
You have options.
