recently picked up an 02 gti. factory speakers as well as factory amp in rear dr side corner of car. i'm looking at replacing the factory woofers with some MB Quart (RCE 164 package) and leave the stock front tweeters in place and running (i'll disconnect rear tweets, prefer no highs in rear for imaging). i don't like harsh, sharp tweeters and so far the stockers seem decent enough.
any input on going this route?

You could do that if the mbq component set you use uses a 4 ohm tweeter.

it does, but i would suggest upgrading if you dont have monsoon (i didnt see if you did or didnt in your post) pretty much anything will be a step up over the base stereo

car has a sony headunit swapped in. i'm guessing it is Monsoon as it has the amp in the rear and the window sticker from VW was marked 'premium with 8 speakers' ?
