Hi all, I'm a long-time lurker, first time poster... anywho... I've noticed recently (today) when I accelerate from a stop, there's a strange knock or kick as I pass about 1400 RPM. It's not repetitive or anything, as it's just a quick (but worrying) thing.

It feels like running over a small dip in the road. Oddly enough, it doesn't happen if if rolling and accelerate past that point, only if it's from a standstill. Any suggestions?

Sorry, forgot to mention, it's an 8 valve.

motor mount? loose bolt somewhere? get under your car and make sure everything is nice and tight

Might also be a loose suspension component up front. Ever happen while braking too?
Edit: oh, how many miles you have on that? adjusted the clutch lately? A clutch that's starting to wear can also slip just a bit under high load, like a standing start.

My car does this too. Also, when it shifts into 2nd gear (it's an auto) and I'm on it, it will kick a little harder. That's because the car needs new motor mounts and stuff is moving around in there and shifting back when you take off. It isn't quite as noticeable once you're moving, but you'll feel it when you're on it.

Sounds like a worn motor mount or a vaccuum leak. Check for torn boots.

Maybe that "kick" is power you never had because the 16v fairies just got around to doing your swap!

Thanks for all the replies, it helps now that I have some ideas of where to look.

... well, I think I can rule out motor mounts, they're only about a month old, also not the clutch, as it's an automatic. Hm... Suspension could be suspect, I'll have to have a look at that, as upon really scrutinizing the perfromance when I drove this morning, it seems to be coming from that general area, rather than from the engine itself (thankfully). Anywho, thanks again for the responses... now to clear my schedule for some tinkering...

I just fixed that yesterday. New motormount(driver's back) and it drives like a brand new car. Mine was broken and it would make that horrific clunk. I could feel it on the tranny too!

The rear bushing on the front control arms. If the bolts are even a little loose (especially with aftermarket bushings) the suspension will clunk when accelerating and braking....
