Re: strut mount question (bigb201)

okay. i have some suggestions for you but others will hopefully chime in and offer some other insight.
i am on my 3rd set of strut mounts since installing an aftermarket suspension on my car.
first they went on my H&R + Billstein Sport Combo,
then on my Koni Coilovers...twice.
so now i'm on SPC Camber Kit which is a direct replacement for the strut mounts. I would suggest going this route for added security that they won't blow in the future.
please read my thread:

also, some will tell you that the strut mounts are easy to get to and shouldn't take but 30 minutes to install.
i disagree and we had to remove the entire front suspension which was a pain in the rear.
goodluck!

my front strut mounts are shot!!! It sounds like a brick rolling around in my wheel well. I have a few questions.
1. I have coilovers so do I need a spring compressor to do the job or can I just remove the whole assembly?
we couldn't use the 2 spring compressors we had at the shop because it didn't fit the springs that come with my Koni Coilovers... what we had to do instead is undo the strut mounts and release the suspension from the top so it's moveable, and then we removed the bottom of the suspension.
then, with the front suspension off of the car, put the whole assembly in a vice and go to town on lowering the threads on the coils all the way down so that the spring is free and moveable. that takes the pressure off of the top nut that holds the strut bearing in place and what not...which allows you to work without the spring compressor.
replace the blown strut mounts with new ones or with the camber kit i have suggested, and reinstall...and repeat for the driver's side.

2. Should I replace the bearing as well? I have heard that they don't usually go bad.
yes, anytime you have access to the bearing, i would suggest replacing it. both times my bearings were shattered...yes they crumbled in my hand. so, if you go the route of the camber kit, you'll need to order a new set of strut bearings and a new set of securing nuts.
3. Has anyone done this? or should I just pay someone? I am pretty mechanically inclined.
get someone that knows what they're doing to help you. but watch carefully so you know how to do it in the future. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
4. how bad is it to drive around on blown struts?
bad.

I tried posting in the suspension forum, but I don't think anyone is in there. Thanks.
