I think Volkswagen built the Passats so that nobody could ever remove the carpeting for a complete shampooing.
It's like the first thing they installed in the whole car was the carpets, followed by the dashboard, followed by all sorts of wiring, and then the seats. It is virtually impossible to remove those carpets.

Do you know anyone that has a Bissel carpet shampooer (Is that a word? Looks kinda stupid.) that also has a hand attachment, so you can do steps? If you were closer, you could borrow mine.

I don't know if shampooing is wise because of the additional padding that is under the carpet (at least where the feet go). This padding will happily absorb all the moisture and water you through at it and keep it. Who knows how long it takes before that water evaporates? It could get mildewy. You might do more harm than good.

I have one of those Hoover carpet shampooers, and it has all sorts of attachments, but I wanted to clean every square centimetre of the carpet (as well as clean all of the pieces in the console/dashboard).
When I had my Mercedes, the carpet was really easy to remove, everything came right up (there were a few screws, and that's it, no seats, dashboards, etc... in the way).

Actually, its pretty likely that a Mercedes of 91 vintage is assembled the same way. Its a matter of production processes and steps. Most cars now use a single piece carpet for the whole interior, its easier to put in one piece instead of multiple parts. MB engineers and VW engineers come from the same stock and likely were educated at the same schools, the only real difference is a high volume car and a low volume producer (relatively speaking).

Yea, my Mercedes was a '76.
The only carpet that was connected to the car was below the doors, and on the tranny tunnel in the rear. The other carpets were just mats.

The carpet in my car used to be black. Now it's like a dusty grey with spots of all sorts of filth.

carpet who needs no stink'n carpet

if ur like me the carpet wil be a real pain the butt to get it back in properly once u take it out
.
i would just use a steam vac with the carpet still in and the seats out and the trim out(door sill trim and center consol).
if u do use steam vac becarfull not to soak the carpet to much cuz it will stink like crap when the underlay begins to rot away!

How do you figure? The carpet IS only one peice...Trust me.
If you ever plan on ordering it, i can do it for you Ken.. $650cdn peso's is less than 1/2 of what you were quoted.

Re: stupid carpets  (N'Syncro)

I am talking about a regular B3, so when all you synchro guys start yellin...don't look at me. Anyways, I completely replaced the carpet in my B3. It happens to have 2 (two) pieces. There is a front portion, and a rear portion. They meet underneath the front seats. I have no idea if your synchro jargon is the same...but the front carpet in whatever color you want you can pick up for $369USD (thats rape me retail - dealer cost is so far below that)from the dealer for us unsyncro types.
To answer the original question...you can actually pull the carpet (if you know what your doing) in about 20 minutes...front and rear. The hardest part is the middle up front...underneath the center consule. You do have to cut the middle apart there, as just as you suspected...they started with the carpet, and built and entire car around that. You will also have to cut then new piece you want to put in in that same area..unless you want to strip your car down. You best bet for gettin all the crap outa your carpets would be to pull them, and professionally shampoo them, and then take a hot pressure washer, and hose them down...you can basically turn old carpets into new with those tactics

Re: stupid carpets  (Soviet B3)

Wow. that's weird. I swear my syncro was one peice. I had to cut it underneath the fron seats to seperate the front and back to pull it out.
