so... here's my story of the week.. the car / turbo everything is going great.. i had it up on a lift the other day to do an oil change.. at the same time i re-adjusted the exhaust so the downpipe doesnt hit the steering rack anymore.. but now one of the nuts fron the turbo to downpipe just loves to come off.. could other exhaust vibrations (muffler hitting bracket / rear axle (it does this a LOT!!) be causing these nuts to losen up?? im at a loss here.. ive gone through 2 diff nuts now.. maybe switch the studs out for bolts?!?!

The normal spring type lock washers lose their spring once they get that hot.
The "squished" nut type of locking nut (like the big one that holds the outer CV joint on) seem to work pretty well.

The nuts are "interference fit". Imagine taking a normal nut and putting it into a vise and clamping down on it until it deforms a bit. Now you've got a slightly oval nut. The first few threads are circular, so it threads on normally at first, but once you are halfway into the nut or so, it starts to grab because the nut is slightly deformed.
Autotech sold me these with my exhaust studs - I think they were about $0.50 each. Had I been thinking, I would have bought 3 more for my downpipe as well.
(The nuts are copper, (copper plated at least), BTW)

are these the type of nuts you are talking about stephen? i went to autozone and told them of my prediciment and these are the kind of nut they gave me.. its not plastic on the inside, but it does have a cut in it to supposedly lock itself in place
please excuse the crappy drawing.. did it in pshop real quick.

Emphatically no.

The work better than just the normal thing, for sure, but I have had problems with them coming loose too. (usually within the first week - if they stay that long they are probably fine). They don't fall off, just come loose (in my experience anyway)
I will try to find (or draw) a picture of what I am talking about.

couldn't find a picture of one that was worth a crap (the picture I found was indistinguishable from a normal nut)
Here is my attempt at drawing one.

Of course, this is a bit of an exaggerrated version, but you get the idea hopefully.

The BEST nuts for this application are exhaust nuts for a aircooled vanagon.
Steel nuts with copper thread inserts & the interference fit locking action. Buy at dealer.
If this is problematic, get aircooled beetle exhaust nuts, solid copper & the same interference locking action everyone is talking about. Like 30 cents a piece at ANY aircooled VW/dunebuggy shop. they thread onto a m6 stud, but use a 12 mm wrench instead of 13 too, so more clearance for your wrench

Make sure they are solid copper though, the copper plated ones rust on solid

take care,
Steve
