Ok, I'm on my way to school on I-84W coming up on exit 11. At this section the highway has 3 lanes: passing, travel, tuck/slow lane (has those double dashed lines).
I'm in the truck / slow lane doing about 70 which all 3 lanes are doing. I'm in this lane b/c my exit was < 1/2mi ahead and driving this route daily has tough me to get over early or I'll miss the exit! So I'm over there going along. Some red 80's body Chevy Cavalier comes up FAST behind me. I'm nexto a truck so nowhere for me to go, and cops hide around this area so I wasn't about to speed up to get out of his way. So he passes me on the shoulder!!!
I was like WTF, I have NEVER seen anybody that stupid before.
He then picked his pace back upto 80-85 and started weaving in and out of traffic!
Why are some people so stupid?
Were you near Hartford? I swear I see the WORSE driving whenever I'm near there. The only other thing it could be is he had Mass(hole) plates and was in a hurry to get back to some chowdah and a couple Sammies.
I was just on 84 not too long ago... there are sections of that highway about as hectic as 128 up here... then you get out toward Stafford Springs and it's a ghost town, except there is a raceway there... yeehaw!
Edit: WOOHOO this was my 2000th worthless post!
[ComicBookGuy] Oh, I've wasted my life [/ComicBookGuy]
Yea I live at exit 9 and coming home everyday from waterbury is just a joke. I-84 is just turning into crap, people are really just a bunch of jerks I see weaving and passing on the shoulder everyday pisses me off like no other. The trailer trucks are starting to irritate me with thier tailgating. It pisses me off cause they think thier 70-0 is like 2 feet. GGGrrr..... Kinda cool to see somebody from my area on the tex tho
I've never driven in MA before, but here in my neck of the woods, there's this Olympic something or other getting ready to start in a day or two...
You can imagine the chaos that is ensuing. Masses of rented Chevy Trail Blazers meandering around the freeways at 80-85mph looking for the right Olympic Venue exit. It's getting worse byt the day too. We're planning on an influx of 65,000-80,000 people into downtown SLC every night!
Time to get the bike out...
Xenondub,
Ya I do not drive to waterbury anytime near rush hour. I live in Southbury and it backs all the way upto exit 15!! It's worse than Danbury's traffic.
Keep an eye out for a Silver Golf TDI, I'm all over I-84 all the time

As people have said, this is pretty common practice in Massachusetts. There are even roads where it's legal to drive in the breakdown lane during rush hour.
I believe the roads are:
Rt 128 between Newton/Rt 9 and Canton/Rt 138. 6am to 9am and 3pm to 7pm.
I-93 between Andover and Methuen. Southbound in the AM, northbound in the PM.
We did that all the time, but only during rush hour and people are going 10 mph.
This reminds me of a time when I was in highschool. We were in the big ass yellow school bus and stopped to drop off some kids. Just as the girl in front of me is about to step out a car passes us ON THE RIGHT!
For those of you in England I'll remind you that this is the side where the kids get out of the bus!
The bus driver radioed in the guy's license plate number and the cops nabbed him. He got beat down HARD by the judge on that one.I think they should have revoked his license.
We also drive in the breakdown lane on RT 3 South from Hingham to Hanover and its expanding to Marshfield. Without it, rush hour would 10 times worse. People don't realize that in Boston, there is a major city with only 2 lane highways accessing it. The environmental groups block all legislation for adding lanes on to highways around here because of some spotted extra rare purple people eating salamander.
Whats worse on RT 3 south, is that it goes through an affluent part of the state where the "Infamous Left Lane SUV Soccer Mom with Cell Phone" lurks. This is a dangerous species of soccer mom. She often lurks in Boston's left lanes doing 40 mph on the cell phone while putting on her makeup and beating the kids. This is one of the reasons many people drive in the breakdown lane
Oh yeah, I forgot about Rt 3 south of the Southeast Distressway.

She also might be doing her nails or reading a romance novel.
The club cab pickup trucks hauling day laborers to work on the Big Dig are almost as bad. The driver is usually on the cell phone and weaving all over the road. If it wasn't for breakdown lanes and sidewalks, you'd never get there.
Hey landrumdh
we should see if there are any other dub heads in our area we should start a VW club and just hang out or something. I think club H20 meets in monroe which isn't to far from us.

Yup, but they meet monday nights
I have a 7:45-10:10pm class on monday night
.
But I'd be up for a G2G sometime when it's warmer out to enjoy some nice dubs. I have 2 friends I might be able to bring along. One dosen't drive but loves VAG and the other has a Rado, but it's in NY at his house (goes to my college).

He should also have been reprimanded for not stopping behind a school bus w/ its red lights flashing ...
attempting to pass
a) a stopped school bus
b) on the right
geez ... what was he thinking??
Last year, some guy in Memphis was close behind (I believe) a semi on I-240 and tried to pass on the shoulder. Too bad there was a dump truck parked there. Hate to see anyone lose their life, but I don't feel sorry that person.
yup when I was in middle school in Glastonbury. We stopped to pickup somebody red flashing lights. She had to cross the street and luckly noticed the car coming up behind the bus that wasn't stopping. He pulled into the oncomming lane and passed the bus while it had it's lights on, and there were other cars behind us!
Luckly one of them was the police chief in an unmarked unusual car. Lets just say the bus driver and all the kids were laughing their butts off the rest of the way to school when that cop took off like a bat outta hell after that guy!!
. One time I was riding with my parents (they are my transportation since I cant drive), and something similar happened. We were going along on the freeway in the fast lane doing 75 or so. All of the sudden some riced out car flies by us on the left shoulder going maybe 85 or 90. Then another one does the same thing
. And just today, we were merging onto the freeway from an onramp. Then I heard a loud exhaust, and out of nowhere some Nissan truck flies by on the right shoulder. Then right after that a big rig was merging into the slow lane, and ends up cutting off Mr Nissan truck who had suddenly showed up were the rig was trying merge. I was laughing after that one hahaha

That's right where I live! Plenty of idiots driving around here. It's like every moron driver has to drive by here to get where they are going. I live right next to the highway and work right off the highway 5 miles away, but I drive twice as far on the back roads to avoid all the pinheads (plus there are some awesome twisties that way
