Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat

I wonder why a 2002 Passat have such high Insurance rates when compared to other similarly priced and rated vehicles? Many different reports show that it is one of the most safe vehicles to drive and have a low rate of theft, shouldn't these factors lower insurance costs?
I am 25 yrs old and have driven for 8 yrs with a continued perfect record. AAA quoted me a price of $1700/yr for a 2002 Passat GLX while a similarly priced and rated Toyota Avalon or PT Cruiser or Nissan Altima will cost me $250-380 less for car insurance. Are parts for the Passat that much more expensive than Japanese and domestic cars to justify this higher price or is this price gouging?

Wow! That is high. I found that Progressive had the best rate when I purchased my Passat. I pay $700 a year. (I have a PERFECT driving record though!)
Re: Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat (katie)

I have a about 2 speeding tickets (still on record), one failure to obey a traffic sign, and one HOV violation, I am 23 years old, adn my insureance on my 2002 passat is only $1400/year. How is your credit? If you have good credit that is a rather large factor, do you own your own home? that also brought my rate down. Are you married? this was my biggest rate buster. I had a 1997 GTI before my passat and i was paying $1800/year with that. After the end of this year my rate should drop again. all my tickets come off this year. (thank god, lets just say when i was 19 i had a lot of fun in my GTI!!!!!
Re: Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat (SCUCD)

$141.00 a month for a Sports Sedan isn't that bad. First off, are you getting quotes for a 1.8T or a V6?? Have you shopped around for different quotes? Have you played with the different levels of coverage and PIP? (Depends on your location!) Your credit rating also plays into the picture when shopping for automobile insurance!
I pay $120.00 a month to insure my 2001.5 GLX 4 Motion through GEICO. I know it's not the lowest rate, but I also have a 7 Year/100,000mile extended warranty, and $5000 worth of PIP. My friend you are also 25 years old, which is still considered very high risk by many insurance underwriters. Your rates should go down again in a year or two, but it depends on the underwriter. Progressive and StateFarm tend to have great quotes but I've been insured by GEICO for 15 Years; (since I've been driving) and my driving record is spotless.
You also may want to look at multiple-policy discounts. Do you own a home or need rental insurance? I'm not an insurance agent, but you should do a little more research and get as many quotes as you can.

FYI for anyone interested......here's the symbols that the industry uses for comp/collision rating (with the exception a select few companies):
2002 Model Year
Passat GLS Symbol
Sed 4 Dr 14 1.8L/4
Wag 4 Dr 15 1.8L/4
Passat GLS V6
Sed 4 Dr 16 2.8L/6
Wag 4 Dr 16 2.8L/6
Passat GLS V6 4MOTION
Sed 4 Dr 17 2.8L/6
Wag 4 Dr 17 2.8L/6
Passat GLX V6
Sed 4 Dr 18 2.8L/6
Wag 4 Dr 18 2.8L/6
Passat GLX V6 4MOTION
Sed 4 Dr 19 2.8L/6
Wag 4 Dr 19 2.8L/6

In a nutshell, the scale goes from 1 to 27 with (21+ is rated a little different - cars like porsche being in this class). The higher the symbol the higher the rate. Just to give you an idea, the difference between a symbol 14 and 15 is about 10%.
Some reference points...the Dodge Caravan SE is a symbol 5, and the base Altima is a 13. One of the main components that drives this is repair costs.

Well, it didn't format very well, but the symbol is indicated after the Dr (4 door), then comes engine option (quite obvious to those that frequent the board).

Re: Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat (DaisyCutter)

When comparing insurance rates, dollars mean nothing unless we are comparing apples with apples. In other words, to get meaningful comparisons, we need to compare coverage limits, deductibles, and options. Comprehensive and Collison each generally have separate deductibles and those amounts account for the largest difference between policies. An example to prove my point.
Deductibles of 1000 Comp/1000 Col = lower premium
Deductibles of 100 Comp/100 Col = higher premiums
Many choose 500/500 and in fact many banks require such coverage as a minimum since "they own the car" more than we do!
Re: Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat (mmmmark)

Make that "comparing local apples to local apples." My agent told me that if I moved just 6 miles west (from Orleans Parish into Jefferson Parish) my rate would drop almost exactly 50%!
Thanks for the info Daisy Cutter. I wonder why the V6 has the higher rate when everybody knows it's the conservative family driver who buys the V6; if you wanna toss it around and push some edges, you get the 1.8T.
C'mon... where's my reward for being a good boy and growing up to be responsible? How about doing your actuarial homework! (quick poll: what percent of insurance actuaries drive Japanese cars? Ummhmm)

Re: Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat (vista2variant)

Minor consolation for your point: the 5-year good driver discount, at least that's what GEICO calls it.
And, yeah, locality definitely counts, as I saw my premiums were more than double in S.Florida compared to the DC area for exactly the same coverage on the same car. When I turned 25, my premiums didn't go down much.
Getting married seemed to help more.

vista2variant, those symbols can change over time, so if that's the case they may drift downward.
What your agent is describing is the effect of territorial rating and, yes, that can have a huge effect on rates, as in your case. Territory structure can vary widely from company to company.
I drive a Nissan Pathfinder, the wife drives the VW

Again depending on the company, but marriage will only help if are less than 25

Area has much more to do with insurance rates than the vehicle. I moved from Santa Barbara, CA to Phoenix, AZ(good neighborhood) and my rates doubled. Ouch....

Re: Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat (mmmmark)

Thanks everyone for your reply. The details of the $1700/yr quote form AAA (California State Automobile Association) was for a $500 collision/$500 comprehesive coverage with a $100K/$300K coverage for property/medical. I live in Sacramento, CA with good credit. I am 25 yrs old with 8 yrs of perfect driving record.
Does anyone still think this is a high price to pay to drive a 2002 Passat GLX?
From CarReview.com, AAA is presented as "a non-profit organization of 84 automobile clubs throughout the United States and Canada" so why are their prices one of the highest in the auto insurance business?

FYI, I'm paying around $1080 per year for my car (see sig). $250 Coll/$500 Comp, $100K Property/$300K Medical. Am 28 yrs old and almost 10 yrs of driving experience w/ 1 speeding ticket years ago (no record, just pay the fines). Insured thru Allstate.
Re: Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat (SCUCD)

GLX may make a big difference, but I just compared rates lately;
Accord 4-cyl. 1999 849$C
Passat 2002 868$C
Passat 2002 V6 1276$C.
Multiply by 2/3 for $US. I am surprised by the step for the V6.

AAA is notoriously expensive. Try a few other reputable companies such as State Farm and 21st. If you don't mind, try also others.
Insurance rates are highly dependent on geography ($700 in Palo Alto versus $1000 in L.A. for me!) and age. Some insurers look at occupation and marital status as well. The difficult part is that you can't usually classify one company as being consistently less expensive than another. Let me give you an example. All companies look at whether you have at least 9 years of experience, which is a very significant factor in determining your rate. But is is very possible that company A will be cheaper than company B when you have 8 years of experience, but as soon as you have your 9 years under your belt, company B might become a better deal. Another example. Say you are a professional. Company A may give you a discount for it, but not company B. But for a guy who is not a professional, B might be more inexpensive. Do you get the picture? Which company will give a good rate depends largely on many factors specific to your situation. Bottom line: shop round.

Re: Such high Insurance Costs for a New Passat (timho)

I am almost identical to Tim in age and record and rate. I insure through State Farm and in addition have NO deductible on the comp. 1.8t auto 2002. I live in Portland, OR, a major shipping port. But I feel that it is still very expensive - I hope it goes down as the car depreciates, right?
