Hey all, I've got a 2000 GTI VR6 (totally stock) and I'm looking to increase engine performance on a budget. I know I can't afford anything crazy like a turbo or charger, but I was hoping y'all could steer me in the right direction regarding good engine mods to do.
What are some things I can do that would be easy install and give me more power to the wheels?
I know intake / exhaust are prob the first things, but what else?

look at my sig I feel a good gain from these mods, anythings past cams and boltons becomes pretty expensive.

heres how if i have to do it again
1 -better suspension and tires than stock--- it will make you love driving your car again http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
2 -chip/cold air intake/2.5" exhaust--- try to get some used parts here in the tex... or get a custom exhaust from a muffler shop...
3 -cams/lifters/valve springs
4 -harder motor mounts--- better reaction from the motor when you step on the gas http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
gl and yes it really gets expensive after this

and why does everyone do CAI as opposed to a short ram?

cams & lifters...springs aren't required unless you go with 268 or higher, CHIP GIAC, Q-CHIP and TT are the better ones, short ram intakes unless shielded rob horsepower, you want the engine to pull in the "coolest" air possible(not cold air either)...exhaust, there are quite a few on the market and all will gain you more or less the same increase in power, only difference being the look of the exhaust and the tone...in my opinion don't believe the hype, 2.25 & 2.5" will gain you about the same, Autotech even proved that with their systems, except that the 2.5" will suit those who plan to go turbo/supercharged
BUT first and foremost before shelling out any money do a complete tune-up now because if your engine isn't running in top form, no amount of performance upgrade will benefit you or the engine

the actual work of installing cams isn't that difficult, it's the attention you must pay in making sure that the engine is aligned at TDC and that it stays at TDC while you are doing the work..having a bentley is a must and also if you study the timing chain dyi it will make the whole process easier.

so as for suspension / tires. I'm interested in performance, not appearance. what is the best rout to go for suspension / wheel and tire size?
not sure I have the money for coil overs, what are some cheaper alternatives?
do stretched tires affect performance?
how do bigger / smaller wheels affect performance?

save up for the coilovers(the cheapest coilovers i know of is the vmaxx and they are roughly $5-600) bc if you get shocks and spring it will be almost the same cost as the coilovers...
as for tires get some max performance summer tires (goodyear F1, toyo t1r, hankook rs2(which i prefer)) for your stock wheels or aftermarket wheels and save your stocks for the winter... also somewhere close or the stock tire size, unless you want to stretch them...
...i had stretched tires before on my show wheels (5 sets)for my mk2 and i drive pretty aggresive on them (on the highway) and it didnt affect my handling much... but i had to be carefull not to take corners really fast...
the bigger wheels will be heavier and will accelarate slower than smaller wheels...

The unfortunate thing about the Mk4 chassis is that lowering the vehicle lessens effective "handling ability". Head over to the suspension tech. forums and read around.
